Saturday's $300,000 La Brea S. (G1) at Santa Anita marks the return of GABBY'S GOLDEN GAL (Medaglia d'Oro)
to the racing wars following a layoff of nearly six months. The Bob Baffert
trainee coasted home in the Sunland Park Oaks in March and upset the Acorn S.
(G1) at 13-1, but her brief spring/summer campaign is also remembered for some
ghastly efforts as well. Gabby's Golden Gal set things up for presumptive
champion Rachel Alexandra's (Medaglia d'Oro) record-breaking margin of victory
in the Kentucky Oaks (G1), but wilted to finish more than 29 lengths behind in
sixth. After rebounding in the Acorn, Gabby's Golden Gal stumbled at the start
and trailed home last of nine in the Prioress S. (G1) on July 4.
