Winx's future race plans pending after fourth Cox Plate win
In winning her fourth consecutive Cox Plate, Winx now has more wins in the premier Australian race than any other horse and extended her win streak to 29. Future racing plans will be put on hold as the 7-year-old daughter of Street Cry enjoys a break following another impressive season of racing.
Tighe and co-owner Debbie Kepitis will currently enjoy Winx's accomplishments along with trainer Chris Waller and jockey Hugh Bowman.
"We leave it all up to her," Tighe told Racing.com. "She’ll call the shots. She’ll have a couple of months before we have to discuss that."
Tighe added that if connections decide to race Winx again, the mare would receive a veterinarian examination to make sure all was well. While Winx has nothing to prove, she hasn't showed signs of slowing down as she continually rewrote her own history.
"...we certainly don’t need to race her but we certainly don’t need to retire her," Tighe added.
Winx has continued to race in Australia instead of traveling to Royal Ascot or other lofty meets. In the Cox Plate, though, she faced Godolphin's multiple Group 1 Benbatl, who has won in Europe, Dubai and Australia. Benbatl was an honorable second, but Winx blew past him with ease.
Tighe admitted he was making a bold statement to Racing.com, but was confident in saying:
"She not only won the race but she confirmed she is the best horse in the world and honestly, I think she's the best horse we'll ever see."
