Future Bright for Point of Entry?

The Phipps Stable’s Point of Entry will be making his stakes debut in tomorrow’s Curlin, but Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey is hoping the Dynaformer colt is on the way to making his presence known in the 3-year-old division.

“I think everyone in the race is at about the same point,” said McGaughey of Point of Entry, 10-1 on the morning line for the 1 1/8-mile Curlin. “I think Neil Howard’s horse, Prime Cut, has more experience than the rest of them, but we’ll see what happens.”

Point of Entry made his debut at Gulfstream Park in January, and broke his maiden in his fourth start, taking an 1 1/8-mile off-the-turf event by 15 ½ lengths over a “good” track. In his next start, the colt was second in a 1 ¼-mile optional claimer on the turf at Belmont on June 29.

“He’s a big old tall, leggy colt,” said McGaughey. “I think the race will help, I think time will help, I think two turns will help.”
