Laurel Park remains under quarantine and testing is being performed to check the scope of an equine herpesvirus breakout at the track after a horse stabled at Laurel tested positive for the virus on Monday.

“As per our standard veterinary protocols, the affected horse was immediately removed from the barn and is currently being treated at Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center,” Stronach Group Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Dionne Benson said in a Maryland Jockey Club Statement. “Upon notification of the diagnosis, the Maryland Jockey Club, again per standard veterinary protocol, immediately closed the backside prohibiting horses from leaving the stable area.” Friday’s slate of races has been canceled, while Saturday and Sunday were still scheduled at the time of the release.

According to the statement from Benson, the sick horse had been in two barns at Laurel, and horses from those barns came in contact with horses in two more. Barns 1, 4, 10 and 11 have been placed under strict quarantine. [RELATED: Laurel Park cancels Friday card following EHV-1 outbreak]

Horses will be unable to ship from the backside of Laurel for at least two weeks from Monday.

“As of this morning, no additional cases of EHV1 have been identified at the Maryland Jockey Club,” Benson said in the statement. “The 1/ST RACING veterinary team will continue to monitor this situation closely and will provide additional updates as they become available and are relevant.”

All Stronach Group venues have been told to increase monitoring due to the outbreak.
