Full fields for turf stakes quintet Wednesday at Canterbury

The highlight of the Canterbury Park stakes schedule is Wednesday, when the Minnesota track plays host to the $150,000 Mystic Lake Derby, which anchors a stakes six-pack that includes five turf stakes – all with 12-horse fields before scratches.

The feature attracted Caesars Stakes winner Stitched as well as his pilot last time out, Florent Geroux, who rides in all five turf stakes Wednesday at Canterbury.

Stitched is one of five Kentucky-based shippers in the Mystic Lake Derby.  Trained at Churchill Downs by Greg Foley, Stitched shipped to Horseshoe Indianapolis last out and won the Caesars in gate-to-wire fashion.

The Mizzen Mast colt has won 4-of-7 lifetime and is the 5-2 morning-line favorite for the final leg of the all-stakes Pick 5, which features a 10 percent takeout.

Kicking off the multi-race action is the first of four $100,000 stakes races and the complement to the Mystic Lake Derby, the Curtis Sampson Oaks.

With 12 horses in each leg, the number of combinations available is 248,832. And with only 10 percent takeout, this promises to be one of the better opportunities for horseplayers all year.

Be sure to check the Horse Racing Nation Youtube page for analysis of the sequence from our own Sara Elbadwi and Canterbury’s Angela Hermann as well as HRN’s Pro Reports page for Power Picks, Charting Horse Value, and more.

Four of the five turf stakes are at one mile, and the HRN Track Trends Tool gives slight preferences to closers or inside runners, but nothing better horses shouldn’t overcome.

The wagering menu is robust beyond the all-turf-stakes Pick 5. The late Pick 5 (races 6-10) also features that low 10 percent takeout, as does the early (post time) Pick 4 (races 1-4). There's also an all-stakes pick 4 (races 5-8), rolling Pick 3s, and rolling doubles.
