The morning after the full 4-year-old brother of the late Shared Belief won his first race at Gulfstream Park, trainer Murat Sancal on Saturday said that "hopefully many more will follow."
Shared Legacy will continue to stable at Gulfstream amid the COVID-19 pandemic that has shut down racing in Kentucky. Once the health crisis calms down, Sancal said he'll look to races at Churchill Downs and Kentucky Downs for the regally bred son of Candy Ride.
“As soon as everything clears, we are going to make plans," Sancal said.
In Gulfstream's 10th race, a five-furlong turf sprint, Shared Legacy bested 10 others in a final time of 57.09 seconds. At nearly 10-1, Shared Legacy beat race favorite R Man Joe by 1 1/4 lengths.
“It’s a nice feeling," Sancal said. "I feel great to see him in the winner’s circle."
Under jockey Paco Lopez, freshly back from a five-day suspension that ended Thursday, Shared Legacy broke through in what was his eighth career start.
Shared Legacy is, as with Shared Belief, a champion who won 10 of his 12 career starts, out of the Storm Cat mare Common Hope.
Shared Belief was a more precocious type, garnering the 2013 Eclipse Award as top 2-year-old male following his 3-for-3 freshman campaign in 2013 that included victories in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes (G3) and Cashcall Futurity (G1).
It wasn't until the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic, when Shared Belief was swiped leaving the gate, that he lost. The gelding won his next three starts, before being vanned off following the 2015 Charles Town Classic (G1). On Dec. 3 of that year, he was euthanized due to an acute case of colic.
Shared Legacy, a $1.9 million RNA in the 2017 Keeneland September sale, is a homebred of owner Arif Kurtel. The colt made his debut at Keeneland in April of 2019, finishing last in a field of 12.
A year later, he’s now a winner having run over multiple surfaces and at a number of distances, showing, $40,520 in earnings.
“He came out of the race very nice. He has a lot of energy and he hasn’t lost anything,” Sancal said.
Shared Legacy and Shared Belief also have a full sister in the un-raced Turkish-bred Lady Candy, who was foaled in 2012. They have half-siblings out of Common Hope who have won races, including graded stakes winner Little Miss Holly, Multitasker and Believe in Victory.
