A septet of juvenile fillies will each look to earn their first stakes victory competing in the $100,000 Key Cents for New York-breds at six furlongs on Sunday at Aqueduct Racetrack.
Headlining the field is Gabrielle Farm's Frosty Margarita for trainer Rudy Rodriguez. A dark-bay daughter of Frost Giant, the 2-year-old filly has one win from four career starts with three second-place finishes. Last out, racing at one mile in the Maid of the Mist for New York-bred fillies on October 24 at Belmont Park, she led a field of 12 before being caught late in the stretch to lose by less than a half-length.
Cutting back for the Key Cents and drawing the rail as the 9-5 morning-line favorite, Frosty Margarita will depart with Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the irons.
Owner Mike Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher will enter a pair of Giant Surprise fillies in Taken by Surprise and Surprise Cameo. Making her first two starts on the turf, Taken by Surprise broke her maiden on the dirt at Aqueduct on November 4 traveling three wide before edging clear to earn the victory by 2 ¾ lengths.
5-1 on the morning-line and drawing post-position 4, Taken by Surprise will retain the services of Hall of Famer John Velazquez. Surprise Cameo, who is set to make her fifth career start, will look to rebound from a sixth-place finish in the Maid of the Mist.
Trainer Leah Gyarmati will enter Melodic for Treadway Racing Stable. After winning her debut on September 2 at Saratoga Race Course, the daughter of Tale of the Cat followed with a win in the Joseph A. Gimma Stakes where she bested co-entrant Frosty Margarita by three lengths. Most recently, in the Maid of the Mist, Melodic found her herself racing three-wide most of the way before tiring to finish seventh.
Breaking from post 7 and the 3-1 second choice on the morning-line, Melodic will be reunite with Kendrick Carmouche who piloted the filly to her first two career victories.
Rounding out the field are recent maiden graduate Here Comes Rosie for Jeremiah Englehart and Southfield Farm; Lemon Liqueur for My Meadowview Farm and trainer Rick Violette; and Louisville First for trainer George Weaver.
