Friday works: Medina Spirit drills 6f to lead a busy tab

2021 Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit turned in his final major move Friday toward the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

The 3-year-old son of Protonico breezed six furlongs at Santa Anita in 1:11.6, best of only two local works at the distance. He worked over the same Arcadia, Calif., oval where he defeated older rivals Oct. 2 in the Awesome Again Stakes (G1).

Medina Spirit sports a 9: 5-3-1 record with nearly $2.53 million earned heading into the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 6 at Del Mar. He will try to make that race his third career Grade 1 triumph and fourth graded win overall.

Bob Baffert trains Medina Spirit for owner Zedan Racing Stables. The Breeders’ Cup has demanded extra testing for Baffert’s runners at the World Championships, a decision following fallout from Medina Spirit’s failed drug tests after the Kentucky Derby.

Other Breeders’ Cup hopefuls working Friday morning included Mile contender Got Stormy. She cruised a half-mile in 48.6 seconds at Churchill Downs under jockey Declan Carroll.

Mark Casse trains Got Stormy, a 6-year-old Get Stormy mare. She carries a 31: 12-5-3 record and just shy of $2.41 million in earnings, with Grade 1 scores in the 2019 and ’21 editions of Saratoga’s Fourstardave Handicap and Del Mar’s Matriarch Stakes in 2019.

“We had some rain in the area, but the track was really good, so I decided to move her work up a day,” assistant David Carroll said of Got Stormy, who ships to Del Mar on Monday. “Sometimes you see with older mares that they may take a step back from their younger campaigns, but she has been doing great. I’m really excited the way she’s coming into the Breeders’ Cup. She’s a very special mare to all of us.”
