Freshman sires: Yaupon pulls away, battle for 2nd heats up

As the 2025 racing season enters its final weeks, Yaupon has put the freshman sire championship virtually out of reach. With 38 wins from 157 starts for a 24.2% strike rate through Monday, the son of Uncle Mo has established a commanding 13-win lead over his nearest rival.

The battle for second place remains competitive. Knicks Go holds the runner-up position with 25 wins from 164 starts, and Maxfield and Essential Quality are locked in a tight race for third with 21 wins apiece. Maxfield has achieved his total from 138 starts compared to Essential Quality's 132, giving both stallions nearly identical 15% strike rates.

Recent winners

Yaupon continued his strong showing with three winners in the last week, led by Tallmar's maiden score at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday. Solitude Dude and Prosecco Rita also scored victories for the stallion, with Prosecco Rita winning at Laurel Park at odds of 1-5. Knicks Go added two winners during the week, including Maddie's Garden's debut victory at Fair Grounds on Sunday.

Seven other freshman sires each registered a winner during the week. Independence Hall scored with Inde Rose at Tampa Bay Downs, while By My Standards added Timeless Victory to his tally with a victory at Gulfstream Park. Beau Liam, Leinster, Maxfield, Essential Quality and Silver State each added single winners as the season winds down.
