Freshman sires: Life Is Good, Golden Pal are off to hot starts

The 2026 freshman sire crop reached 21 stallions represented through May 18, and Golden Pal and Life Is Good are knotted atop the standings with three wins apiece. Life Is Good remains the crop's most efficient operator, posting his trio of victories from just five starts for a 60% clip, and Golden Pal has been the most active sire with 10 runners and wins recorded on dirt, turf and synthetic surfaces.

Early Voting has been the story of the last week, sending three starters to the races over five days and coming away with one winner, one runner-up and one show. The son of Gun Runner now stands at two wins from four starters, a 50% strike rate, and has firmly established himself as one of the standouts among the 2026 freshman class.

Life Is Good, a son of super-sire Into Mischief, stands at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky. The 2-year-olds racing now were conceived when his introductory stud fee was $100,000, one of the highest ever for a newcomer. His early results have backed up that fee, and breeders impressed by his winners are in luck this year, as his fee has dropped to $60,000.

Golden Pal, a son of Uncle Mo, stands at Coolmore's Ashford Stud, also in Versailles. The two-time Breeders' Cup winner was one of the most brilliant turf sprinters in recent memory. Just like his own sire, Golden Pal's sons and daughters can win on anything, dirt, turf or synthetic. His introductory stud fee was $30,000 and he currently stands for $25,000.

Meanwhile, Early Voting has had an eventful career at stud. The 2022 Preakness winner was sire Gun Runner's first Classic winner from his first crop, no less. The Chad Brown trainee impressed in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy as well before faltering in the Travers (G1). He initially retired to stud at Coolmore for a $25,000 fee. But fertility issues took him out of service until late 2024, when he was moved to Taylor Made Farm and resumed duties at a $12,500 rate.

Recent winners

Early Voting's week was highlighted by He Is No Lie, who wired the field at 4 1-2 furlongs on the main track at Santa Anita on May 15 as the heavy 2-5 favorite for trainer Doug O'Neill. It was the second winner in four outings for Early Voting, and it came as part of a remarkable week that also featured Lady Lux finishing second in her debut at Churchill Downs on May 14 and First Site running third in her debut at Belmont at Aqueduct the following day.

Golden Pal notched win number three on May 17 at Woodbine, where Ez Tina broke her maiden going five furlongs on the synthetic in her first career start for trainer Wesley Ward. The filly won as the 5-to-4 favorite in a field of six, bumping Golden Pal's overall total to three wins and three places from 10 starters.

First starters

Aloha West, the 2021 Breeders' Cup Sprint winner, registered his first crop starters on May 17 when both Duval (Churchill Downs) and Ohana Lulu (Woodbine) debuted. Ohana Lulu put in an encouraging effort, finishing second in the same Woodbine turf sprint that Ez Tina won for Golden Pal, while Duval ran third at Churchill Downs.

Cyberknife, the 2022 Haskell Stakes (G1) and Arkansas Derby (G1) winner, also entered the freshman sire books this past week when Cut Throat debuted at Churchill Downs on May 14. The colt went postward as the 3-to-2 favorite in the nine-horse field but finished ninth. Cyberknife will get another chance quickly, with Baru entered at Laurel Park on May 23.

This week's entries

The freshman sires have 12 entries across three days, with Golden Pal and Life Is Good each sending two runners to the same race. Roadster loads up with three entries on Friday, as Strike and It's Smoking head to Gulfstream Park and Rebelka returns at Laurel Park, where she finished second in her debut earlier this month. Both Strike and Rebelka showed on debut, giving Roadster a pair of returning runners with momentum heading into the weekend.

Golden Pal's Shining Moment is the one to watch at Churchill Downs on Thursday, taking on a five-furlong turf sprint in Race 3 at 5-to-2 odds. The Ward-trained filly was the beaten favorite in her debut at Keeneland on April 24 — she finished second to longshot More Champagne — and will look to go one better here. Life Is Good sends Beach Life and Twice the Life to the same Belmont at Aqueduct race on Friday, giving the crop's co-leader an opportunity to move clear at the top of the standings.
