Free PPs now available for Derby preps, Dubai World Cup
With the Kentucky Derby little more than a month away, the schedule now turns to the most important preps, offering up to 100 points for the race winners. This weekend will feature two such races.
Saturday’s marquee event will be the $750,000 Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park, which will be headlined by the Shug McGaughey-trained Greatest Honour. The Tapit colt comes into the race off wins in his last three races, including the Holy Bull (G3) and Fountain of Youth (G2).
Greatest Honour, the presumptive favorite, already has 60 Kentucky Derby points, good for third on the leaderboard.
Bob Baffert’s first-ever runner in the Florida Derby, Spielberg, will be among those looking to knock off Greatest Honour. The Union Rags colt comes in fresh off a second-place finish in the Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn on Feb. 27.
Spielberg previously won Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) in December. He enters the race 16th on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard, with 14 points.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Known Agenda also looks to be a major player in the race. The son of Curlin has no wins in stakes company, but won an allowance race at Gulfstream going the Florida Derby distance of 1 1/8 miles in his most recent trip on Feb. 26.

The other 100-40-20-10 points-paying Derby prep comes at Turfway Park with the Jeff Ruby Steaks. Run at 1 1/8 miles over a Tapeta Surface, the race is set to feature a 12-horse field.
The race includes the winner of the Battaglia Memorial, Hush of A Storm, trained by William Morey. The colt has won his last three races at Turfway, including the 1 1/16-mile Battaglia and carries 10 Derby points into the Jeff Ruby, good for 29th on the leaderboard.
The race will include a rematch of the top four from the Battaglia, including third place finisher Gretzky the Great, running for trainer Mark Casse. The Canadian-bred Nyquist colt last won in the Summer (G1) on grass at Woodbine in September.
Trained by Rodolphe Brisset, Tarantino will be running on a synthetic track for the first time in the Jeff Ruby. The Pioneerof the Nile colt ran fourth in the Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream in his most recent trip. He previously had finished second in the Holy Bull (G3). Tarantino sits 32nd on the Kentucky Derby points leaderboard with nine.
Free Brisnet PPs are now available for the Jeff Ruby Steaks.
Another top race this weekend will be the Dubai World Cup (G1) at Meydan. The Dubai field is led by Mystic Guide, who won the Razorback Handicap (G3) for trainer Michael Stidham in his last race.
The Ghostzapper colt will face off against 13 others, including Jesus’ Team, who most recently finished second in the Pegasus World Cup (G1) on Jan. 23.

Beyond the Derby preps, the American racing slate this weekend will also include the Pan American (G2) for ages four and up, going 1 1/2 miles on the lawn at Gulfstream.
The race features Cross Border, trained by Mike Maker, who earned his last win in the 2020 Bowling Green (G2), going 1 3/8 miles at Saratoga in August. The 7-year-old son of English Channel finished third in the Jan. 23 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream.
Cross Border will be joined by 2017 Pan American winner Sadler’s Joy. The 8-year-old finished fourth in the W. L. McKnight Handicap in his most recent race.
