A competitive field of ten has lined up for Gulfstream Park's first 3-year-old Derby prep of 2020 in Saturday's $100,000 Mucho Man Man Stakes.

The one mile race is a good opportunity for recent maiden winners to take their next step and for stakes winners coming off disappointing efforts to snap back to form.

Mutasaabeq is one of two graded stakes winners in the field. He captured the Bourbon Stakes (G2) on the turf at Keeneland, but his best race to date may be his impressive debut score on the dirt at Saratoga.

Todd Pletcher's $425,000 colt proceeded to run a distant third in the Hopeful (G1), which led to the switch to turf for the Bourbon. After a poor effort in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, it is back to dirt for the son of Into Mischief.

Which Mutasaabeq will show up on Saturday? For that answer, we turn to our friends at Brisnet for free past performances.

According to Brisnet's Prime Power Rating, Mutasaabeq's class and experience make up for his inconsistent form.

Mutasaabeq has a clear 5.5 point advantage on Brisnet's scale with the rest of the field bunched up behind. Pickin' Time, the other graded stakes winner in the field, ranks second in the Prime Power Rankings. The Nashua (G3) winner will take plenty of wagering support as bettors will be quick to toss his poor effort in the slop in the Remsen (G2) last time. Even after excusing his last race, he does not have much of an edge on the remainder of the field and he has been facing suspect company. From a value perspective, it makes sense to look for an alternative to round out the exacta.

Finding runners who can pass horses is vital in races early in the 3-year-old season. Many debut winners win by going wire-to-wire and with so many similar styles, it is often a horse who can sit off the pace who wins a race such as this.

To find the best closer in the field, we turn to Brisnet's Late Pace Rankings.

The Florida-bred Big Thorn is a standout in this category. He is taking a class hike after consecutive easy wins at Gulfstream Park West, but he could very well be this good and he has the right style to sit a good trip despite a wide draw. The improving son of The Big Beast is the right horse to play in exactas and multi-race wagers with Mutasaabeq.
