Franny Freud Retired

Franny Freud, the 5-2 morning-line favorite in Saturday’s Grade 1 Test at Saratoga Race Course, will miss the race with a career-ending ligament injury.

 The injury was discovered Thursday morning after the 3-year-old daughter of Freud had a routine gallop.

 “It’s kind of shocking, but I’m glad we caught it before it could have developed into something worse,” said trainer John Terranova. “She galloped beautifully this morning, as usual. She never has anything wrong, but she had a slight amount of filing on the outside of her ankle. We took an ultrasound, and we saw she had damage to the ‘XYZ’ ligament.”

 Owned by Paul Pompa, Jr., Stephen Yarbrough, and Winter Park Partners, Franny Freud won seven stakes in her career, including the Grade 1 Prioress at Belmont Park July 4 in what would be her final start. She retires with a record of 8-2-0 from 11 starts and $698,197 in earnings.

 “She’s a Grade 1 caliber filly, and we were able to prove that,” said Terranova. “The good ones like her don’t come around very often.”
