Separated by just a neck when last they met, Stormy Lucy, Gender Agenda and Glory all rate big chances as they head a field of 12 older fillies and mares set to contest Santa Anita’s Grade III, $100,000 Megahertz Stakes at one mile on turf this Monday.
An upset winner of Del Mar’s Grade I, one mile turf Matriarch Stakes two starts back Nov. 29, trainer Ed Moger’s Stormy Lucy was flying at the finish in the Grade III, 1 1/8 miles turf Robert J. Frankel Stakes here on Dec. 27, finishing second, beaten a neck, by Gender Agenda.
A deep closer who has kept consistent graded stakes company in Southern California dating back to June of 2012, the 7-year-old Stormy Atlantic mare appears to be at the top of her game and will hope to find room turning for home when cutting back a furlong in distance on Monday. With Kent Desormeaux set to ride her for the third consecutive time, Stormy Lucy is has one win from eight tries at a flat mile on turf. Owned by Steve Moger, “Lucy” is 32-8-3-5 overall with earnings of $791,700.
Although regarded as best suited going a mile on turf, trainer Carla Gaines’ Gender Agenda pressed the passed in the Frankel and prevailed under Rafael Bejarano in a thrilling finish. With an 8-3-1-1 mark at the Megahertz distance, the 5-year-old English-bred mare by Holy Roman Emperor can be expected to bring a top performance on Monday, and will be ridden by Tyler Baze, who has guided her to one win in five tries.
Owned by Keith Brackpool, Alon Ossip and Timothy Ritvo, Gender Agenda has four wins from 11 stateside starts and is 18-5-3-3 overall with earnings of $287,108.
Fox Hill Farms’ Glory, a lightly raced 4-year-old filly by Tapit, tried gate to wire tactics in the Frankel, but was collared late by Gender Agenda and ended up third, a nose behind Stormy Lucy. The 5-2 favorite in the 12-horse Frankel, Glory, like Gender Agenda, could well appreciate the cutback in distance and looms a major threat with Mike Smith engaged to ride her back. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Glory is 9-3-2-2 overall with earnings of $145,370.
Third, beaten 2 ¼ lengths two starts back in the Grade III, Sen. Ken Maddy Stakes at 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf, trainer Tom Proctor’s Theatre Star comes off a close fifth down the hill in the Grade II Monrovia Stakes and rates a legitimate chance stretching out off of three consecutive turf sprints. With two seconds from four tries at a mile on turf, Glen Hill Farm’s Theatre Star, a 6-year-old mare by War Front, is 17-5-3-3 overall with earnings of $247,405.
Ultra consistent Chaulk O Lattey, who is conditioned by red-hot trainer Richard Baltas, comes off a close second in the 1 1/16 miles turf Kathryn Crosby Stakes (restricted) Nov. 7 and seeks her first added money win in the Megahertz. A 5-year-old California-bred mare by Silic, Chaulk O Lattey runs on the front end and figures to ensure a solid pace. Bred by Nadine Anderson and owned by Brazeau Thoroughbred Farms, Little Red Feather Racing and Anderson, Chaulk O Lattey is 5-3-1-1 at one mile on turf and is 10-4-2-2 overall with earnings of $237,928.
