Fountain of Youth fair odds: Napoleon Solo, I can't bet you

The deepest Kentucky Derby prep of 2026 to date is unquestionably the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

This race has it all for Triple Crown trail lovers: the 3-year-old debut of an undefeated 2-year-old Grade 1 winner, a hot shot maiden trying stakes company, and brilliant sprinters stretching out.

Gotham Stakes: Odds, analysis for Kentucky Derby prep

Napoleon Solo figures to go favored and understandably so, given his undefeated record in two starts by a combined 11 3/4 lengths and gaudy performance ratings to go with it. Still, 1 1/16 miles off a 21-week layoff against one of the best fields of 3-year-olds assembled is a tough enough ask that I'm willing to fade him as the favorite.

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. trains three of the 11 Fountain of Youth entrants, and two of them – Holy Bull Stakes runner-up Bravaro and Swale Stakes winner Solitude Dude – have serious chances to upset Napoleon Solo. Solitude Dude is also undefeated, winning his three starts by a combined 21 1/4 lengths.

The Fountain of Youth marks the two-turn debuts of both Napoleon Solo and Solitude Dude, and it's fair to expect the former to handle that a little better. He already has gone a one-turn mile, and he is by Liam's Map out of a Scat Daddy mare. Solitude Dude has gone only as far as seven furlongs and is by Yaupon. Still, at 8 1/2 furlongs, I'll gladly take the longer price on Solitude Dude.

The wildcard is Chief Wallabee, the Constitution colt who freaked on debut and should have no problem going longer, being out of the Medaglia d'Oro mare A La Lucie. BUt Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott is just 1-for-13 the past 11 years when running a 3-year-old in a stakes in just his or her second career start, with plenty of short prices among the dozen who failed to win.

There's a chance Chief Wallabee is as short as second choice, and I just can't back him at that kind of attention from my fellow bettors.

Two other horses I'm against are Jackson Hole and Commandment. Both impressed with wins last out, but neither got speed figures that make them competitive enough against Napoleon Solo or the Saffie duo to put them in the mix at their expected prices.
