Flemington is set for the biggest day on the autumn racing calendar with Super Saturday, featuring Group 1 racing at its best and the return of the popular Flemington Grazing Trail & Cellar Door, a preview to this year’s Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.
Headlining Super Saturday on the track is the $1.5 million TAB Australian Cup (2000m), which will bring together Victoria’s best weight-for-age gallopers, and the $1.25 million Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m), which presents an electrifying clash of world-class sprinters up the famous Flemington straight six course.
Off the track Flemington’s famous front lawn (west end) will come alive with the best local and regional produce from more than 40 of the finest boutique wineries, breweries and food producers, including The Forge Pizzeria, The Flying Calamari Brothers, Nuts-About-Tella and Gundowring Finest Ice Cream.
For the first time racegoers will also be able to indulge at a dedicated fromagerie area, with delicious cheeses on offer from Milk the Cow, That’s Amore Cheese, Maker & Monger and Yarra Valley Dairy.
To round out the perfect Melbourne foodie experience acclaimed chef Adam D’Sylva will bring a taste of his celebrated restaurants Coda and Tonka to Flemington, with FREE cooking demonstrations on the James Boag’s Premium Celebration Deck. Racegoers can also purchase D’Sylva’s signature dishes including buffalo mozzarella salad, sticky pork belly and roasted yellow duck curry to enjoy on the deck.
On the track the TAB Australian Cup will see the 2016 Caulfield Cup heroine Jameka tackle Darren Weir’s powerful duo of Humidor and Stratum Star, as well as the Lloyd Williams-owned The United States and Awesome Rock for Leon and Troy Corstens.
In the Lexus Newmarket Handicap, the 2017 Black Caviar Lightning trifecta of Terravista, Spieth and Star Turn will again do battle in the time-honoured sprint. Other key chances in the race include Group 1 winner and defending champion The Quarterback, Sheidel from the all-conquering Lindsay Park team, and star colt Extreme Choice who gets the services of Hong Kong’s champion jockey Joao Moreira.
Famous faces at Flemington on Super Saturday will include VRC Chairman Amanda Elliott, Flemington ambassador Georgia Connolly, Myer milliner Kim Fletcher, guest chef Adam D’Sylva, Channel 7 meteorologist and weather presenter Jane Bunn and My Kitchen Rules contestants Karen & Ros and Courtney & Duncan.
Channel 7 will be showcasing all the colour and excitement from Flemington on the day, with the team including Francesca Cumani and Bruce McAvaney OAM delivering live coverage from 12 noon of all the action both on and off the track.
Entry to the Flemington Grazing Trail & Cellar Door is FREE with an admission ticket to Super Saturday ($25). Tickets and tasting glasses ($20) can be purchased from ticketek.com.au.
