Flatter Pod video: New tech can signal horse injuries

New technology tested this spring and summer at Churchill Downs and Ellis Park has shown how injuries to horses might be signaled to trainers before they become serious or even life-threatening.

On this special video episode of Horse Racing Nation’s Ron Flatter Racing Pod, Eclipse Award-winning trainer Dale Romans and veterinarians David Lambert and Denise Mc Sweeney demonstrate StrideSafe. Using a small sensor placed in a saddle cloth, the movement of a horse is measured thousands of times a second to see if it is off. In some cases it has revealed injuries and prevented further damage.

Also in this episode, National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association CEO Eric Hamelback points out that the new technology will not replace the skills of a horseman, and Lambert addresses that in this episode recorded late last month in Romans’s barn at Churchill Downs.

This special presentation also was part of the regular Friday episode of the Ron Flatter Racing Pod via HRN.
