Country Life Farm's Flash McCaul, second in the Maryland Million Nursery Stakes and the Maryland Juvenile Futurity, drove down the stretch Sunday to win a $42,000 allowance optional claiming event on Laurel's Super Bowl Sunday program.
Second in four consecutive starts since breaking his maiden in September, the 3-year-old gelding was driven past It's the Journey and King's Swan Stakes runner-up Sallisaw to win by three lengths.
Trained by Michael Trombetta and ridden by Julian Pimentel, Flash McCaul covered the mile in 1:39.12.
Sallisaw, fourth in last year's Hopeful (G1), and It's the Journey, third in the Maryland Juvenile Futurity, raced past fractions of :24.33 and :48.24 while Pimental saved ground around the turn before swinging three wide entering the stretch and driving past the pacesetters.
A son of Friesan Fire, Flash McCaul has two wins and four seconds in six career starts.
