First look: Breeders' Cup 2019 pre-entries, post times
Most speculation over who's in the Breeders' Cup ended just after 11:30 a.m. ET Wednesday when pre-entries were announced for the Nov. 1-2 championship races at Santa Anita Park.
A total of 187 horses were pre-entered, with 46 of those hailing from outside the U.S.
Pre-entries precede Monday's post position draw and, in many cases, will determine the fields. Over-subscribed races will show horses set in order of preference should defections in the main body occur.
Here's a look at the 2019 Breeders' Cup race lineup with all times Eastern:
Friday, Nov. 1
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (4:12 p.m.)
The Wesley Ward show rolls on in this division with his trio of Kimari, Four Wheel Drive and Cambria certainly formidable. Four Wheel Drive is, as with Another Miracle, by top first-crop sire American Pharoah.
Good luck to the Americans here with a strong foreign presence again. One surprise: Princesa Caroline, the sister of Lady Eli, who won this race in 2014, is entered off a debut victory at Belmont Park.
Bob Baffert-trained Bast, a multiple Grade 1 winner, leads this field. British Idiom and Wicked Whisper enter off top-level victories of their own, while Donna Veloce figures to take money as an eye-catching first out winner for Simon Callaghan.
Aidan O'Brien-trained Arizona enters off a second to Europe's top 2-year-old, Pinatubo, in the Dewhurst (G1), while Chad Brown will seek his first victory in this race with Structor, a domestic stakes winner.
It's all about the Big 3 of Eight Rings, Dennis' Moment and Maxfield, the Grade 1 winners who all prevailed impressively on their way to this event and a likely trip down next year's Kentucky Derby trail.
Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (2:55 p.m.)
Don't miss the championship opener here. It should be a good one, with the 3-year-old Covfefe going up against Come Dancing, an older mare making this her swan song having been defeated just once this season, and to Horse of the Year candidate Midnight Bisou.
Stormy Liberal will go for a historic third straight victory in this race, but he hasn't won since last year's victory at Churchill Downs. As for who could supplant him? This one's always a crapshoot, and note it will run at five furlongs, avoiding the downhill turf course.
Omaha Beach, impressive in winning his comeback in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G1), will stretch out a bit and figures to go as a heavy favorite in this two-turn event.
This race runs through defending winner and Eclipse Award champion Sistercharlie, who's 3-for-3, all at the Grade 1 level, this season. Magical, her top expected rival, lists the Turf against the boys as her first preference.
Mitole's march toward a championship continues in what's expected to be his career finale. Catalina Cruiser, California-based, adds intrigue with Imperial Hint and the 3-year-old Shancelot both pure speedsters.
Circus Maximus, an O'Brien runner, leads this bunch with two ladies worth watching. Got Stormy already beat the boys in the Fourstardave (G1) at Saratoga, while Uni was supplemented off a record-setting victory in Keeneland's First Lady (G1).
Midnight Bisou, 7-for-7 this season, all in graded stakes company, will look to finish that perfect season here against a tough bunch. Street Band is an up-and-coming 3-year-old, while Blue Prize reasserted herself when winning Keeneland's Spinster (G1) last out.
Bricks and Mortar will go a career-long distance with this race listed as his first preference. Another unbeaten Horse of the Year contender this season, he got the year started in the Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1). Will he have to contend with Magical? Last Saturday's Champion Stakes (G1) heroine finished second to Enable last year.
No surprises here, with 11 set to go postward and anticipated favorite McKinzie entering off a defeat in Santa Anita's Awesome Again (G1). Elate, the mare, will look to duplicate Zenyatta's feat of winning the Classic 10 years later, while Code of Honor, Math Wizard and Mongolian Groom won Grade 1 races in their most-recent starts.
