Owner J. Paul Reddam and trainer Doug O”Neill, who gained national attention this spring through the exploits of star three-year-old I”ll Have Another, unveiled another outstanding prospect Sunday when Know More, a two-year-old colt making the first start of his life, won the featured $150,000 Best Pal Stakes.

With Garrett Gomez in the saddle for his career debut,  Know More, sent postward at 8-1, wore down Heir Kitty in the final sixteenth to win by a half-length in 1:16.14 for the 6 ½ furlongs over the main track, running his final sixteenth in slightly less than six seconds.  Miss Empire was third, 1 ¼ lengths behind Heir Kitty and the same margin in front of Heir of Storm in the field of eight two-year-olds. Heir Kitty and Miss Empire are fillies trained by Peter Miller.

Scherer Magic, the even-money favorite fresh from a triumph in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship, finished fifth after racing in traffic in the early stages of the sprint.  Know More, a son of Lion Heart and Seattle Qui,  rewarded his backers with an across-the-board payoff of $19.20, $8.80 and $9.80. First money was $90,000.  Heir Kitty, off at 9-1 under jockey David Flores, paid $8 and $10.60, while Miss Empire returned $13.40 to show.

I’ll Have Another, Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner who was denied a chance at the Triple Crown when he was injured days before the Belmont Stakes, was runner-up to Creative Cause in the 2011 Best Pal Stakes.  The Best Pal Stakes is the major prelude to the closing-day Grade I $300,000 Del Mar Futurity on Wednesday, September 5 at seven furlongs, a race O’Neill said Know More will be pointed toward.

With no perfect tickets in the Pick Six, Wednesday’s program will have a carryover of $257,477.

Sunday’s attendance was 16,762.
