First Look: Opening weekend at Oaklawn, Los Alamitos

Oaklawn opens Friday with a sprint stakes for 2-year-olds, and Los Alamitos will host a Kentucky Oaks point race on the first weekend of its six-day meet. Aqueduct also offers a stakes on a light weekend.

Here is an early look at the likely fields.

Friday

Advent (listed), Oaklawn, 5 1/2 furlongs, 2-year-olds

Spirit’s Mischief switched to dirt and broke his maiden in her second start, winning by 4 1/4 lengths at this distance last out at Keeneland. Frost Free is 1-for-1 after a maiden-special-weight win at Lone Star. Ceepeegee won his second start at 32-1 after a stretch duel on turf. Bye Bye Liam broke his maiden at Churchill Downs in his second start and first on dirt, winning by a head at 27-1.

Saturday

Starlet (G2), Los Alamitos, 1 1/16 miles, 2-year-old fillies, 10-5-3-2-1 Kentucky Oaks (G1) qualifying points

Probables were not available for this race, so here are some of the nominees with recent works. Chatalas led gate to wire in the Chandelier before finishing ninth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Nothing Like You broke her maiden in his fourth start then won the listed Desi Arnaz Stakes by a nose, with Don’t Bring Crazy and Halone, also nominated here, finishing fourth and fifth. Great Forty Eight broke her maiden last out at a mile.

Mistletoe (listed), Oaklawn, 1 mile, 3-year-old fillies

Big Bad Diva has only an allowance win in seven starts this year and in her only stakes start, she was third in the Iowa Distaff, with Butterbean also entered here, finishing fourth. Effortlesslyelgant returned from a layoff to finish fourth in an optional-claming allowance at Churchill Downs. Lovely Ride has moved from Robertino Diodoro to Sean Williams and will have her first start since May 29.

Garland of Roses (listed), Aqueduct, 6 furlongs, fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Headland was in the money four times with two wins before switching to turf and finishing ninth in the Autumn Days. Downtown Mischief returns from a break after finishing fifth in the Victory Ride. Before that, she had a record of 5: 4-1-0, including two stake wins. Kant Hurry Love had eight straight in-the-money finishes before finishing fourth in the Pumpkin Pie. Disco Ebo has a record of 5: 4-1-0 this year and won an allowance at Parx last out after a six-month layoff.
