First Look: Kentucky Derby Day undercard's powerful probables

It has been discussed in great length how moving the Kentucky Derby back four months will affect this year's race. Not only does the September start date change the Run for the Roses, it magnifies the undercard races as well.

The Turf Classic (Grade 1), Derby City Distaff (G1), Distaff Turf Mile (G2), Pat Day Mile (G3) and American Turf (G3) have been elevated from nice mid-year races to key Breeders' Cup preps. For the first time, fans will have a chance to see future Derby hopefuls on the same card as the current ones with the Iroquois (G3) for 2-year-olds also slated for Derby day.

The Derby undercard consists of six graded stakes, and the early probables consist of enough firepower to scare Jack Sparrow.

Newspaperofrecord, Serengeti Empress and Echo Town are a few of the many stars set to take stage prior to Tiz the Law and company strutting their stuff in the Derby.

Below is an early capsule look at the expected entrants and overview of the Saturday undercard stakes. This will be updated with more probables as they become apparent. Click here to view the latest update on the Kentucky Derby field. Grade 1, $1,000,000 Bourbon Turf Classic, 1 1/8 miles on the turf, 3-year-olds and up

Overview: This $1 million race likely will heat up with even bigger names and possibly some European imports closer to Saturday, but for now it is a competitive, wide-open field. As usual, Chad Brown has a strong hand with Digital Age and Sacred Life. Impressive Bernard Baruch winner Somelikeithotbrown and G1 California shipper Bowie's Hero add to the intrigue of this affair.

Grade 1, $500,000
Derby City Distaff, 7 furlongs on the dirt, fillies and mares 4 years old and up

Overview:
The Derby City Distaff, formerly the
Humana Distaff, will feature last year's Kentucky Oaks winner, Serengeti Empress, fresh off her impressive win in the Ballerina. Defending champion Mia Mischief, Bellafina and Ce Ce add to the Grade 1 quality of the field.

2020 Derby City Distaff (G1)

Grade 2, $500,000 Distaff Turf Mile, 1 mile on the turf, fillies and mares 4 years old and up

Overview:
Newspaperofrecord has regained her best form, and everyone will be watching this spectacular filly in here. She will be the heavy favorite but will face solid competition from defending champion Beau Recall and graded stakes winners Daddy is a Legend and Juliet Foxtrot.

2020 Distaff Turf Mile (G2)

Grade 2 $500,000 American Turf, 1 1/16 miles on the turf, 3-year-olds

Overview:
Much like the Turf Classic, expect bigger names to come trickling in over the next week, but as of now multiple Grade 3 winner Field Pass and recent Jersey Derby winner Vanzzy highlight the probables.

2020 American Turf (G2)

Grade 2 $500,000 Pat Day Mile, 1 mile on the dirt, 3-year-olds

Overview:
Recent Grade 1 winner Echo Town will try to stretch out to a one-turn mile, while Attachment Rate and Rushie will cut back in distance if they end up in this spot instead of the Kentucky Derby. Highly touted Cezanne will look to improve off of his disappointing effort in the Shared Belief. This often is arguably the most intriguing race on the Derby undercard as it features horses with a wide variety of backgrounds, and this year looks no different.

2020 Pat Day Mile (G2)

Grade 3 $200,000 Iroquois, 1 mile on the dirt, 2-year-olds

Overview:
It will be exciting to see next year's early Kentucky Derby hopefuls on center stage in this race. Therideofalifetime appears to be the horse to beat following his second place finish in the Saratoga Special. Ellis Park Juvenile winner Pico d'Oro and recent maiden winners Belafonte and Drop Anchor look to take the next step in their development.
