First Look: Goodnight Olive returns + Haskell preview day

Goodnight Olive can redeem herself at Belmont Park Saturday after her frustrating loss on Kentucky Derby day broke her seven-race win streak.

Monmouth Park has three graded stakes on tap for its Haskell preview day, and Santa Anita has the only graded stakes on the Sunday calendar.

Here’s an early look at the likely fields.

Saturday

Bed o’ Roses Invitational (G2), Belmont Park, 7 furlongs, fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Goodnight Olive, the likely favorite, looks to bounce back after finishing third in the Derby City Distaff (G1). Wicked Halo, second in the Distaff, also is expected here. Beguine’s 9 3/4-length win in a Belmont Park allowance May 20 was her first start of the year. Caramel Swirl and Dr. B finished 1-2 last out in the Vagrancy (G3).

2023 Bed o' Roses Invitational G2

Salvator Mile (G3), Monmouth Park, 1 mile, 3-year-olds and up

Bourbonic is 1-for-12 since winning last year’s Wood Memorial (G3), with the lone win coming in a February optional-claiming allowance at Aqueduct. This would be the first stakes for Petulante, who is 2-for-2 this year with an overall record of 5: 3-2-0. Ridin With Biden would make his first start since finishing 12th in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1). He won three of his prior four starts heading into that race.

2023 Salvator Mile G3

Monmouth Stakes (G3), Monmouth Park, 1 1/8 miles (turf), 3-year-olds

Never Explain has won three in a row, including his first stakes last out in the Dinner Party (G3). Speaking Scout was fourth in that race by a half-length, a neck and a neck, and he has yet to win this year. Big Everest is 2-for-2 this year, with both wins in stakes, and has won six of his last seven.

2023 Monmouth Stakes G3

Eatontown (G3), Monmouth Park, 1 1/16 miles (turf), 3-year-old fillies

Malavath would make her second start for Christophe Clement after a European career plus two Breeders’ Cup appearances. She was fifth of five last out in the April 16 Plenty of Grace Stakes at Aqueduct. Vergara’s fifth-place finish in the Gallorette (G3) was her first start since she was second in the Sands Point (G2) in October.

Sunday

San Juan Capistrano (G3), Santa Anita, 1 3/4 miles (turf), 3-year-olds and up

Three of the top four finishers from the San Luis Rey (G3) are possible here, including winner Offlee Naughty, who also won the Charles Whittingham (G2) in April. Queen ofthe Temple won the Santa Barbara last out by a neck over Duvet Day.
