First Look: Colonial Downs hosts loaded Virginia Derby
Seven weeks out from Louisville, the Kentucky Derby trail drops into an unlikely proving ground. Colonial Downs hosts a 50-point qualifier for the second straight year, and this weekend's Virginia Derby attracted a field loaded with 3-year-olds looking for answers after rough recent starts.
Bob Baffert ships Buetane after the Tiz the Law colt ran third in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn. Brad Cox adds blinkers to Confessional after a puzzling fade in the Sam F. Davis at Tampa. Todd Pletcher fires a two-horse shot with Withers runner-up Grittiness and Epic Desire. Riley Mott's Incredibolt, a Street Sense (G3) winner at Churchill Downs, needs a bounce-back after checking in sixth in the Holy Bull (G3).
The Virginia Derby headlines nine stakes this weekend, with the Virginia Oaks also carrying 50 Kentucky Oaks (G1) qualifying points and the Whitmore (G3) at Oaklawn and Grade 3 turf races at Santa Anita rounding out the action for horseplayers looking to cash in from coast to coast.
