Finite sets Rags to Riches Stakes record in Churchill Downs rout
Facing winners for the first time, Finite pressed the pace and drew off in the stretch to score a record-breaking six-length win in the $120,000 Rags to Riches Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs on Sunday.
With Ricardo Santana Jr. in the irons, Finite hounded the even-money favorite Specially on the front-end as that one completed the opening half-mile in a sharp :45.72. Finite drew on equal terms with Specially on the turn and then edged clear after six furlongs in 1:10.37. Finite stayed straight and strong through the lane to win by a widening six-length margin while completing the one-mile trip in 1:35.53.
The final time set a new stakes record, besting the previous record of 1:36.29 set by future champion Monomoy Girl in 2017.
Longshot Lady Glamour was well back in second and was followed by Gone Glimmering. After setting the pace, Specially lugged out in the stretch and finished last beaten 21 1/2 lengths. Finite paid $7.80.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Finite finished second in her first two career starts while trying the main track at Saratoga, then returned to earn her diploma in start No. 3 on the turf at Kentucky Downs on Sept. 12.
"She ran very respectable in her two races at Saratoga and that was an impressive win at Kentucky Downs," Asmussen said. "Seeing her have success stretching out for the first time and win going a mile gets you very excited."
Finite is owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds, Thomas Reiman, William Dickson and Deborah Easter. By Munnings out of the Tapit mare Remit, she was a $200,000 purchase at this year's the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale.
Asmussen said the Nov. 30 Golden Rod (G2), a two-turn, Kentucky Oaks points-paying prep at the end of the Churchill meet is likely next for Finite.
