Watch: Keys to finding Kentucky Derby 2018 longshots

For more than 20 years, Mike Shutty, author of Horse Racing Nation’s Super Screener handicapping system, has compiled research designed to isolate vulnerable favorites and identify live longshots in the Kentucky Derby.

While recorded last year, the updated video below carries longshot theories that hold true for the race every year. Note at the four-minute mark, Mike names only one longshot for the 2017 Derby, and that was Battle of Midway who ran third at 40-1.

With 20 horses in the Kentucky Derby, the race is very hard to handicap but delivers with huge results.  Just look at the recent payoffs:

What is rather amazing is that the favorite has won the last five years.

So the problem isn't necessarily coming up with the winner. It's figuring out the other 19 horses behind him. What keyed huge payoffs in 2017, 2014 and 2013, were the huge longshots.

2017

 2nd, Lookin At Lee, 33-1

 3rd, Battle of Midway, 40-1

2014

 2nd, Commanding Curve, 37-1

2013

 2nd, Golden Soul, 34-1

In 2017, 2014 and 2013, the Kentucky Derby Super Screener identified Lookin At Lee (2017), Commanding Curve (2014) and Golden Soul (2013) as the top longshot bomber.
There were no longshots on the board in 2016 or 2015.

To find out who this year's top longshot bomber is, watch the video and get your copy of the Kentucky Derby Super Screener!
