Final Kentucky Derby 2018 points: Who's in the field?
With final 2018 Kentucky Derby preps in the books Saturday, the field for Churchill Downs' May 5 race appears clearer than ever now.
The 35-race Road to the Kentucky Derby has awarded points to those events' Top 4 finishers dating back to September. A maximum of 20 horses can start in the 144th Derby, with preference for 19 of those spots determined by points. The final position this year was a result of an invitation extended to European qualifier Gronkowski.
At least 20 horses have entered every running of the Derby since 2004. So for the next three weeks, we'll pay close attention to the bubble, with contenders potentially entering the picture should any defections occur. For instance, on Saturday, BloodHorse reported Grade 3 Sunland Derby winner Runaway Ghost came out of a work injured.
Churchill Downs will draw post positions Tuesday, May 1. Two also-eligible horses can also enter, with the scratch deadline for them Friday, May 4.
Note that earnings listed here are not overall, but rather for prize money accumulated from non-restricted graded stakes races. Those earnings are the tiebreaker should horses accumulate an equal number of points.

7. | Enticed | 103 | Kiaran McLaughlin | Junior Alvarado | $545,880 |
His best effort this year came around one turn, in the Grade 3 Gotham. He was second last out after bumping in the stretch of the Grade 2 Wood Memorial. |
Rank | Horse | Points | Trainer | Jockey | Earnings |
8. | Mendelssohn | 100 | Aidan O'Brien | TBD | $1,947,299 |
The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner gives European connections a legit shot. He prepped with an 18 1/2-length score in the Group 2 UAE Derby. Ryan Moore could keep the mount. |
Rank | Horse | Points | Trainer | Jockey | Earnings |
9. | Justify | 100 | Bob Baffert | Mike Smith | $600,000 |
The likely Derby favorite has run just three races, but won each convincingly, including a front-running Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. Another up against the "curse of Apollo." |
Rank | Horse | Points | Trainer | Jockey | Earnings |
10. | Quip | 90 | Rodolphe Brisset | Florent Geroux | $412,000 |
He handled an extra ship well, going in the Arkansas Derby rather than Blue Grass Stakes, and pressed Magnum Moon into the turn. Also the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby winner. |
Rank | Horse | Points | Trainer | Jockey | Earnings |
11. | Flameaway | 70 | Mark Casse | Jose Lezcano | $672,260 |
He shows up every time and has excelled at various distances, and on all surfaces. Blue Grass Stakes runner-up could get a piece in the Derby. |
Rank | Horse | Points | Trainer | Jockey | Earnings |
12. | Solomini | 54 | Bob Baffert | Flavien Prat | $716,000 |
He's unlucky to not have a graded stakes victory to this point. Representing Baffert's second string, he's a quirky sort that should improve with age. |
Rank | Horse | Points | Trainer | Jockey | Earnings |
13. | Bravazo | 54 | D. Wayne Lukas | TBD | $359,913 |
The Grade 2 Risen Star winner took that race with a friendly pace scenario. He followed with a puzzling eighth in the Louisiana Derby. |
Rank | Horse | Points | Trainer | Jockey | Earnings |
14. | My Boy Jack | 52 | Keith Desormeaux | Kent Desormeaux | $622,000 |
He had to win the Grade 3 Lexington, an extra prep after a close third in the Louisiana Derby, and did so by a head. He'll be looking to close at Churchill. |
Rank | Horse | Points | Trainer | Jockey | Earnings |
15. | Promises Fulfilled | 52 | Dale Romans | TBD | $266,480 |
The front-running Grade 2 Fountain of Youth winner ran last in the Florida Derby after chasing suicidal early fractions. He’ll be a longshot on May 5. |
Rank | Horse | Points | Trainer | Jockey | Earnings |
16. | Free Drop Billy | 44 | Dale Romans | TBD | $597,200 |
A Grade 1 winner at 2, he has Albaugh Family Stable in a third straight Derby. Perhaps a tick slower than the best here, he’ll be looking to close. |
Rank | Horse | Points | Trainer | Jockey | Earnings |
17. | Lone Sailor | 42 | Tom Amoss | James Graham | $273,347 |
Connections appear to have figured out his late-running style. He nearly struck in the Louisiana Derby. Just one win, but has consistently run in stakes company. |
Rank | Horse | Points | Trainer | Jockey | Earnings |
18. | Hofburg | 40 | Bill Mott | TBD | $192,000 |
The Florida Derby runner-up is lightly raced, with just three starts, but has a Hall of Fame conditioner and regal breeding. He’ll be a “wise guy” Derby longshot. |
Rank | Horse | Points | Trainer | Jockey | Earnings |
19. | Firenze Fire | 39 | Jason Servis | Manny Franco | $647,500 |
He's run in each of New York's stops on the Derby trail, last winning one back in January. A consistent runner, but he hasn't shown to be a true contender. |
Rank | Horse | Points | Trainer | Jockey | Earnings |
20. | Gronkowski | Euro | Jeremy Noseda | Jamie Spencer | $79,496 |
The European trail’s qualifier will take money given the name, but he prepped with a win on synthetic going a straight mile. If you’re betting him, good luck. |
