Favored Distinctive B won for the second time in as many starts at Los Alamitos, decisively capturing Friday’s $47,725 feature.
Positioned just off the early pace while in the clear under jockey Tyler Baze, the 5-year-old With Distinction gelding took over early in the stretch and drew away inside the final eighth of a mile for his fifth victory in 20 starts.
Trained by Peter Miller for Gary Hartunian’s Rockingham Ranch, Distinctive B, who prevailed by 3 ½ lengths, completed the six furlongs in 1:08.79 and paid $3.60, $2.60 and $2.60 as the 4-5 choice. The $27,600 payday pushed his earnings to $150,645.
Out of the Songandaprayer mare Anythingispossible, Distinctive B earned his first Los Alamitos victory July 5, 2015 when he won a starter allowance at Friday’s distance for then-owners Kieron and Mary DeLahunt and trainer Jim Cassidy.
Making his first start since Feb. 15, the recently-gelded Sir Samson finished second, a neck in front of 23-1 shot Paynes Prairie. Sir Samson, who has been 1-2 in his three starts at Los Alamitos, returned $5.80 and $4.80 while the show price on Paynes Prairie was $9.20.
Racing resumes Saturday at Los Alamitos. Post time is 12:30 p.m.
The card is highlighted by a pair of Grade I races for 2-year-olds – the $300,000-guaranteed Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity and the $300,000-guaranteed Starlet for fillies. Both will be run at 1 1/16 miles.
Trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Mike Smith are favored in the Futurity and Starlet. The Hall of Famers will team with Mastery, the 1-2 choice on Russ Hudak’s morning line, in the Futurity and American Gal, who is 5-2, in the Starlet.
Mastery, a son of Candy Ride, will stretch out after a pair of impressive sprint wins, while American Gal is 2-for-3 and was compromised by a poor trip when third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Nov. 5.
No trainer has won the Futurity and Starlet in the same year while Hall of Famer Kent Desormeaux is the last jockey to sweep the two races, winning the Futurity with Real Quiet and Starlet with Love Lock in 1997 at Hollywood Park.
The Futurity is the sixth race and has a scheduled post time of 2:58 p.m. while the Starlet will go as the eighth about one hour later.
There is also a Los Alamitos holiday ornament giveaway Saturday – one per paid admission while supplies last.
