Fastest maidens: Privman, Tap Into This are speed of the speed

The last seven days have delivered an exceptional collection of maiden winners, with 30 horses posting impressive Horse Racing Nation speed figure. Leading this talented group is 3-year-old colt Tap Into This, who earned a remarkable 127 HRN speed figure at Saratoga.

Steve Asmussen produced an impressive four winners in this week's collection. Bob Baffert contributed another quality debut winner, and several other established trainers showed their ability to have horses ready for peak performance in maiden company.

Elite trainers lead the maiden ranks

Steve Asmussen leads all trainers with four impressive maiden winners topped by Tap Into This's 127 speed figure at Saratoga. The Hall of Fame trainer also sent out Electrifying Lady (117) at Horseshoe Indy, Iron Dome (113), and Lottery Win (105). Todd Pletcher contributed two solid winners with Makes Sense earning 109 and 2-year-old Emphasis posting 96.

Bob Baffert added to his impressive record with debut winners with Privman's 119 figure at Del Mar. Single-horse standouts include Greg Compton's Frack Baby (116), Ralph Martinez's Call Me Christine (115), and Brad Cox's Tactical Trackstar (112).

Sire power

Tapit leads the way among stallions as sire of speed-figure leader Tap Into This (127), and Justify's Privman posted a 119.

Practical Joke contributed Electrifying Lady (117), and Into Mischief was represented by Iron Dome (113). Other notable sire performances include Lord Nelson with Frack Baby (116), Tapiture with Call Me Christine (115), and Complexity represented by Tactical Trackstar (112).

Tap Into This, 127 HRN speed figure

Tap Into This earned the week's top speed figure of 127 with his impressive victory at Saratoga on Wednesday. A 3-year-old colt by Tapit out of Superioritycomplex, this Steve Asmussen trainee lost his footing at the start but still managed to win going away by 3 3/4 lengths in a seven-furlong maiden special weight on dirt. Flavien Prat guided the 3-1 shot to victory in the five-horse field. Douglas Scharbauer owns this prospect bred by Mt. Brilliant Farm and Orrin Ingram. Stakes company might be on the radar next, as this colt is a half-sibling to Grade 3 winner Extra Anejo

Privman, 119

Privman posted a 119 HRN speed figure in dominating a maiden special weight at Del Mar on Sunday by 2 3/4 lengths. By Justify out of Mo Knows, he was sent off as the 6-5 favorite with Juan Hernandez aboard for SF Racing, Starlight Racing and Madaket Stables. The colt delivered with authority over one mile on dirt in his fourth career start. His running style showed tactical speed as he "set pace inside, ducked in upper, drew away."

Electrifying Lady, 117

Three-year-old filly Electrifying Lady posted a 117 HRN speed figure in a determined victory at Horsehoe Indy on Thursday, winning by a quarter-length at 7-2 odds in a six-furlong maiden special weight on dirt. By Practical Joke out of La Milanesa, this Steve Asmussen-trained filly showed heart and determination in her sixth career start under Keith Asmussen. Windancer Farm owns this Mountmellick Farm-bred filly, whose running comment showed tactical speed as she "broke sharply, stalked early 3-path, settled, bid 1/4, vied between in stretch, driving."

Frack Baby, 116

Frack Baby justified his connections' patience with a 116 HRN speed figure victory in his seventh career start. By Lord Nelson, this Greg Compton-trained 3-year-old colt finally broke through with an impressive performance at Delaware Park that suggests he could develop into a useful performer moving forward. The colt's persistence in maiden company has paid dividends for owners Mag Racing.

Lottery Win, 105

Lottery Win finally broke through with a 105 HRN speed figure in his sixth career start, winning a maiden claimer at Ellis Park on July 20th by 3 3/4 lengths. By Maclean's Music out of Rare Article, this Steve Asmussen-trained 3-year-old colt is owned by the trainer and was bred by Three Chimneys Farm. Erik Asmussen guided the 9-2 shot to victory over six furlongs on a muddy track in an 11-horse field. The colt's running comment showed tactical ability as he "vied 2-wide, short lead turn, drew clear 1/4, held sway."

Glory Me, 97

Two-year-old filly Glory Me posted a 97 HRN speed figure in her debut at Ellis Park on July 14, winning by four lengths at 5-2 odds in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight on dirt. It is the fastest so far for 2-year-olds debuting at the Henderson, Ky., track. By Gun Runner out of Grade 3-winning mare Our Khrysty, this Cherie DeVaux-trained filly carries impressive family credentials as a half-sister to Grade 1-placed Grace Adler, a 6-year-old who has earned $259,000. Brian Hernandez Jr. guided the Lael Stables-owned filly to victory in the seven-horse field despite hitting the gate at the start. Her running comment showed determination as she "hit gate start, chased, rally 1/4, 5-path into lane... drew away."

Emphasis, 96

Two-year-old colt Emphasis earned a 96 HRN speed figure in his debut at Saratoga on July 19, winning by one length at 5-1 odds in a six-furlong maiden special weight on dirt. By freshman sire Yaupon out of Grade 1-placed mare Connie and Michael, this Todd Pletcher-trained colt carries quality breeding from both sides of his pedigree and is a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Curly Jack, who has earned $437,000. Ricardo Santana Jr. rode for the partnership of Spendthrift Farm and Repole Stable, with the colt showing tactical speed despite breaking inward at the start. His running comment noted he "broke in start, in hand 2-path, inside on turn, coaxed 5/16, 2-wide at the quarter pole, inched clear."
