The past seven days have delivered a solid collection of maiden winners, headlined by 3-year-old colt Chief Wallabee's remarkable 133 Horse Racing Nation speed figure at Gulfstream Park.  The week's fastest maidens hail from some of the top barns in the country, with Hall of Fame conditioner Bill Mott leading the way with three impressive performers.

Top trainers

Bill Mott prepared the week's top performer Chief Wallabee (133) along with Thunderously (112) and Tiz Freedom (109), demonstrating his mastery with young horses. Brad Cox contributed two quality maiden winners with Rothko earning 108 at Fair Grounds and Touch of Fire posting 103 at the same track. Todd Pletcher sent out Operation Overlord (117) and Epic Desire (100), while Mike Maker produced Delta Tau Chi (110) and Lorelei Lee (107).

Sire influence

Chief Wallabee's week-topping 133 figure highlights Constitution's growing influence, with the top-five sire also represented by Strong Destiny (116), Touch of Fire (103) and Right to Party (101). The four winners demonstrate Constitution's consistent ability to produce fast young horses across different surfaces and distances: his progeny broke their maidens at distances ranging from seven furlongs to 1 1/4 miles including wins on dirt, turf, and Tapeta.

Gun Runner sired Thunderously (112), while Nyquist was represented by two promising winners including Lorelei Lee (107) and Claire Austin (103). Into Mischief continued his sire excellence with Operation Overlord (117) and Tapit contributed Rothko (108).

Top maiden winners by speed figure

Chief Wallabee, 133 HRN speed figure

Chief Wallabee delivered the week's most impressive performance with a 133 HRN speed figure in his debut at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. By Constitution out of the Medaglia d'Oro mare A La Lucie, the Bill Mott-trained 3-year-old colt won by 1 1/2 lengths at 5-2 odds in a seven-furlong maiden special weight on dirt. Junior Alvarado guided the first-time starter to victory for owners Michael and Katherine Ball in the eight-horse field, with his running comment noting he "stalked between, in hand 3-4 path turn, tip 5 wide, bid, clear, handily." The combination of impressive breeding, explosive debut performance and elite connections suggests Chief Wallabee could develop into a serious prospect for major 3-year-old races this year.

Wanna Go Home, 128

Wanna Go Home earned a 128 HRN speed figure when breaking through in her 10th career start at Parx on Wednesday. A 3-year-old filly by Instagrand out of Stayed Home, the Hugo Padilla trainee won by an overwhelming 21 1/2 lengths at 1-1 odds under Mychel Sanchez. The Jack Armstrong color bearer overcame a slight bobble at the break before she "set pace inside, drew off, cruised home in hand" in the six-horse maiden claimer over 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt. The dominant margin suggests this filly has found her niche after gaining experience through previous starts.

Kokosan, 121

Kokosan posted a 121 HRN speed figure while breaking his maiden in his eighth career start at Santa Anita Park on Friday. By Unified out of Coldwater, this John Sadler-trained 4-year-old colt found his winning form, prevailing by 5 1/4 lengths at 4-5 odds under Armando Ayuso. Janavar Thoroughbreds' homebred was "inside 2-wide, cleared upper, in hand late" over one mile on firm turf in the six-horse maiden special weight. He had finished fifth in the Hollywood Derby (G1) in his previous start, experience that helped him put it together when moved back to maiden company.

Close the Gate, 119

Close the Gate, a 3-year-old gelding by Engage, posted a 119 HRN speed figure in his second career start at Laurel Park on Saturday. The John Salzman trainee showed significant improvement from his debut, winning by 9 3/4 lengths at 5-1 odds under Ismerio Villalobos. Bird and Grady's gelding "chased, circled turn, led into lane, pulled away, driving" over seven furlongs on dirt in the 10-horse maiden claimer, demonstrating the kind of progression that suggests continued improvement ahead.

Operation Overlord, 117

Operation Overlord earned a 117 HRN speed figure when breaking through in his fourth career start at Gulfstream Park on Friday. A 4-year-old colt by Into Mischief out of Grade 1 winner War Flag, the Todd Pletcher-trained runner carries impressive family credentials with a Grade 2-winning half-sibling in Capture the Flag. Allen Stable's colt won by 1 1/2 lengths at 5-2 odds under Irad Ortiz Jr., as he "set pace inside, well handled, roused 1/8, drew clear, driving" over 1 3/16 miles on the synthetic surface. The combination of proven breeding, quality connections and progression through starts suggests Operation Overlord could develop into a useful route horse.

Strong Destiny, 116

Four-year-old filly Strong Destiny broke through with a 116 HRN speed figure at Turfwayon Friday, winning by 8 1/2 lengths in her sixth career start. By Constitution out of Barbadia, the Phil Sims-trained filly justified 4-1 odds with an authoritative performance over 1 1/4 miles on the synthetic surface. Bred by Juddmonte and racing for All In Racing and Royer Family Stables, the filly "pressed 2-wide between, 3-wide 9/16, bid 2-wide into second, took over upper stretch, drew off" under Fernando De La Cruz in the eight-horse maiden special weight.

Thunderously, 112

Thunderously posted a 112 HRN speed figure in an impressive debut at Gulfstream Park on Friday. By Gun Runner out of Grade 2 winner Princess Warrior, the Bill Mott-trained 3-year-old colt won by five lengths at 7-2 odds under Junior Alvarado in a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight on dirt. Wathnan Racing's homebred "well rated inside, 4 wide move, drew off final 1/8, ridden out" in the nine-horse field, demonstrating the quality breeding and patient handling that suggests he could develop into a serious route prospect. The combination of Gun Runner's proven ability to sire quality runners and Mott's skill with first-time starters makes Thunderously a promising name to follow.
