Fastest maidens: Lonesome Road dominates for Trombetta

The past seven days have delivered an solid collection of maiden winners, with 22 horses posting a Horse Racing Nation speed figure of 100 or higher. These horses represent the brightest prospects in racing, representing a talent pipeline that could produce the sport's next stars.

Leading the charge was 3-year-old gelding Lonesome Road, who posted a commanding 135 HRN speed figure at Laurel Park, marking the highest figure of the week by a considerable margin. These triple-digit debuts demonstrate the depth of talent breaking through across the country during the holiday racing period.

Elite trainers lead the maiden ranks

Brad Cox continues to demonstrate his mastery with first-time starters, producing three winners with triple-digit speed figures led by Elnajd's 121 debut at Fair Grounds. The two-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer also sent out Bold Strength, who earned a 112 at Aqueduct and Waymark, who posted a 103 at Gulfstream. Mark Casse contributed two impressive winners with French Friction earning a 109 at Oaklawn and Search Party posting 104 at Turfway.

Other standout training performances came from Michael Trombetta with Lonesome Road's week-leading 135, James DiVito with Nu What's New's 133, and Timothy Hamm with Little Thunder's 128 debut. Todd Pletcher, Cherie DeVaux, and Tim Yakteen each produced horses with triple-digit figures as well.

Sire influence

Maclean's Music leads the way as sire of speed figure leader Lonesome Road, adding to his reputation as a reliable source of quality runners. Munnings demonstrated his continued influence with Nu What's New's 133 figure, while Noble Bird made a strong showing with Little Thunder's impressive 128 debut performance.

The late Speightstown continues his lasting influence with two winners including Elnajd's 121 and Bluegrass Town's 100. Constitution and Uncle Mo each contributed solid performers with Bold Strength at 112 and Class President at 110 respectively, while Practical Joke was represented by Secured Freedom's impressive 117 figure.

Lonesome Road, 135 HRN speed figure

Lonesome Road delivered the week's most impressive performance with a 135 HRN speed figure in his third career start at Laurel Park on Friday. By Maclean's Music out of Walk of Stars, the Michael Trombetta-trained 3-year-old gelding overcame early pressure to dominate by 8 1/2 lengths in a six-furlong maiden special weight on dirt. Mychel J. Sanchez guided the 4-1 shot to victory for Estate of R. Larry Johnson in the eight-horse field, with the gelding's running comment noting he "stalked, led 2 wide, pulled away, handily." The half-brother to Grade 1 winner Mindframe demonstrated tremendous improvement in his third start, suggesting he could develop into a serious prospect with continued progression.

Nu What's New, 133

Nu What's New earned a 133 HRN speed figure when breaking through as the 1-1 favorite in his sixth career start at Oaklawn Park on Friday. By Munnings out of Heavenly Scat, this James DiVito-trained 3-year-old gelding shined in a frontrunning 7 1/2-length victory under Luis Saez, defeating Kentucky Derby alumnus Publisher. Doubledown Stables' gelding "broke running, clear before half inside, all the pace, drew out" over one mile on dirt in the seven-horse maiden special weight. Though he had run five times before, this race was his first at two turns on the dirt, suggesting this gelding has found his wheelhouse.

Little Thunder, 128

Little Thunder announced his arrival with a 128 HRN speed figure in his winning debut at Tampa Bay Downs on Wednesday. By Noble Bird out of Circular Rainbow, the Timothy Hamm-trained 3-year-old gelding outran his 6-1 odds with a gritty 1 1/2-length victory under Cipriano Gil. Blazing Meadows Farm and Thomas K. Equels' color-bearer "set pace inside, inside foe on the turn, shook free 3/16, shifted out 1/16, held well" over seven furlongs on dirt in the eight-horse maiden special weight. The impressive debut figure suggests this gelding possesses natural speed and determination that could translate into future success.

Elnajd, 121

Elnajd earned a 121 HRN speed figure in his debut at Fair Grounds on Friday, winning by 1 1/2 lengths at 7-1 odds in a six-furlong maiden special weight on dirt. By Speightstown out of Filfila, this Brad Cox-trained 3-year-old colt carries quality breeding for Shadwell Stable. Marcelino Pedroza Jr. guided the colt to victory in the seven-horse field, with his running style showing early tactical speed as he "pressured pace, held firm." The combination of Cox's proven ability with young horses, the colt's strong debut figure and quality connections suggest Elnajd could develop into a serious prospect as he gains more experience.

Secured Freedom, 117

Secured Freedom posted a 117 HRN speed figure in his second career start at Santa Anita Park on Sunday, winning by 4 1/2 lengths at 8-1 odds in a maiden special weight over 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt. By Practical Joke out of Securely, this Tim Yakteen-trained 2-year-old colt is owned by Leslie A. Amestoy and Pierre Jean Amestoy Jr. Kazushi Kimura rode the colt bred by Audley Farm Equine to victory in the six-horse field. The colt showed a strong closing kick as he "chased off rail, loomed 3-wide, going away." The impressive improvement from his debut suggests this well-bred colt is finding his form at the right time.

Profound, 112

Profound earned a 112 HRN speed figure when breaking through in his fourth career start at Turfway Park on Friday. By Twirling Candy out of Flush, the Cherie DeVaux-trained 3-year-old colt demonstrated tactical speed to win by 1 1/2 lengths at 8-5 odds under Adam Beschizza. Belladonna Racing, Twin Brook Stables and Woodford's colt ran "midpack inside, gained, made a bid for the lead at the 3/16 pole, led from the 6-path at the 1/8 pole, inched away" over one mile on synthetic in the 12-horse maiden claimer. The patient training approach finally paid dividends with this breakthrough performance on the synthetic surface.
