The last seven days delivered an exceptional collection of maiden winners, with 36 horses posting a Horse Racing Nation speed figure of 100 or higher. These first-time victors represent bright prospects in racing, showcasing the talent pipeline that could produce tomorrow's champions.

Elite trainers leading the maiden ranks

Chad Brown once again demonstrated his prowess with maidens, with both Shadow Banking's exceptional 122 HRN speed figure at Aqueduct and Playing Tricks's 114 at Gulfstream Park. Brown also sent out Ottinho, the half-brother of Gun Runner, who posted a 102 in his second start. Butch Reid contributed Ponder and Dream, who earned a 118 at Parx Racing, and Cherie DeVaux added first-time starter Miz Chris with a 105 at Fair Grounds.

Sire influence

Maclean's Music led the way as sire of speed figure leader Shadow Banking, continuing his influence as a top stallion. Good Magic was represented by Playing Tricks, and Uncle Lino made his mark with Ponder and Dream's impressive 118 figure. Omaha Beach contributed Crossingthechannel with a 116, and Upstart sired first-time winner Triple Up. Game Winner appeared twice among the fastest, with Miz Chris and Bank Shot both breaking through impressively.

Shadow Banking, 122 HRN speed figure

Shadow Banking delivered the week's most impressive performance with a 122 HRN speed figure in his third career start at Aqueduct on Friday. By Maclean's Music, the Chad Brown-trained 4-year-old gelding overcame early trouble when he shied in at the start but still managed to win by three lengths at 7-2 odds under Flavien Prat. Klaravich Stables' gelding "prompted 2 path, dueled on the turn, up 4-wide in upper stretch, edged clear" in the five-horse maiden special weight over six furlongs on dirt, showing the kind of determination that suggests he has found his best form.

Bandido Deal, 120

Bandido Deal earned a 120 HRN speed figure when breaking through in his sixth career start at Fair Grounds on Friday. A 4-year-old gelding by El Deal out of Winsky, the Bret Calhoun trainee showed remarkable acceleration to win by 7 1/4 lengths at 2-1 odds under C.J. McMahon. Mansfield Racing's gelding "pressed inside, bid at the 1/4 pole, kicked clear" in the competitive six-horse maiden claiming race over six furlongs on dirt, displaying an explosive turn of foot.

Ponder and Dream, 118

Two-year-old colt Ponder and Dream provided an impressive performance, earning a 118 HRN speed figure in his fourth career start at Parx Racing on Dec. 29. By Uncle Lino out of Spanky, this Butch Reid-trained colt overcame a bump at the start to dominate his maiden special weight, winning by 2 1/4 lengths at 1-5 odds under Mychel Sanchez. Caravan Stable's colt "vied 2 wide, took over, drew clear, held well, driving" over six furlongs on a muddy track, showing determination and class in the six-horse field.

Crossingthechannel, 116

Three-year-old colt Crossingthechannel earned a 116 HRN speed figure in his third career start at Aqueduct on Sunday, winning by a quarter-length at 2-5 odds in a six-furlong maiden special weight on dirt. By Omaha Beach out of In the Navy Now, this Michael Trombetta-trained colt carries quality breeding from the late R. Larry Johnson. Mychel Sanchez guided the Estate of R. Larry Johnson and R. D. M. Racing Stable color bearer to victory, with the colt showing tactical speed as he "stumbled at the break, away in front, pace, inside 2-path on the turn, drew off, just held" in a thrilling finish.

Triple Up, 114

Triple Up, a 4-year-old gelding by Upstart, announced his arrival with a 114 HRN speed figure and dominant 5 1/2-length victory in his debut at Oaklawn Park on Friday. The Shea Stuart-trained gelding justified 9-2 odds with an authoritative performance over six furlongs on dirt under Amir Mendoza. Claim To Fame Stable's homebred was "off a step slow, moved inside, advanced on the turn, tipped out, won going away" in the 12-horse maiden special weight, overcoming early trouble to win impressively.

Playing Tricks, 114

Five-year-old gelding Playing Tricks found his winning form, posting a 114 HRN speed figure in his second career start at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. By Good Magic out of Stellabymoonlight, this Chad Brown-trained gelding showed patience before pouncing late, winning by three-quarters of a length at 7-5 odds under Tyler Gaffalione. The $150,000 Keeneland January purchase for Klaravich Stables "was allowed to settle, 3-wide at the 1/4, closed, up late, driving" over seven furlongs on dirt, demonstrating the tactical awareness that suggests he could develop into a useful runner with more experience.

Ottinho, 102

Two-year-old colt Ottinho carries exceptional breeding credentials, posting a 102 HRN speed figure in his second career start at Aqueduct on Wednesday. By Quality Road out of Grade 2 winner Quiet Giant, this Chad Brown-trained colt is a half-brother to Gun Runner, the Grade 1 winner who earned nearly $16 million. The Three Chimneys Farm homebred showed determination under Flavien Prat, winning by a nose at 3-2 odds in a thrilling finish over 1 1/8 miles on dirt. His running comment noted he "dueled, gamely, prevailed" in the eight-horse maiden special weight, demonstrating the kind of tactical awareness and stamina that runs in his family.
