Misty Eyed posted the day's highest Horse Racing Nation speed figure with a 123 in a seven-furlong conditioned claiming race at Woodbine. The 3-year-old daughter of Mor Spirit, trained by Dale Desruisseaux, jumped quickly to a clear lead and won by 5 1/2 lengths at 3-1 odds. It was her second win in a row and the third of her career.

Lofty Adjudicator earned a 122 HRN speed figure at Churchill Downs when winning a six-furlong allowance optional claimer. The 8-year-old Stay Thirsty gelding, trained by Anna Navarrete, stalked the pace, battled gamely and got up to win by a head at 14-1 odds. It was his fourth win this year, all at the allowance level, and his 13th win in 31 starts.

Poema completed the top three performers with a 117 HRN speed figure at Horseshoe Indiana in a one-mile conditioned claiming race on the grass. The 3-year-old daughter of Kantharos, trained by Paulo Lobo, was the 2-1 favorite as she dropped into a straight claimer for the first time. Near the rear early, she took advantage of a sharp pace, launched an outside rally and got up to win by 1 3/4 lengths. It was her second win in eight career starts.

Fastest maiden winners

Em Chamas posted the day's highest maiden-winning figure with a 115 HRN speed figure at Woodbine. The 3-year-old filly by Flameaway won a 6 1/2-furlong maiden claiming race on the synthetic as the narrow 5-2 second choice, leading at every call. The Mark Casse trainee is out of the Horse Chestnut mare She's Gonna Float, a four-time winner. Merry Madison impressed with a 114 HRN speed figure in a six-furlong maiden claimer at Churchill Downs. The 3-year-old filly by City of Light, dropping in for a tag for the first time for trainer Phil Bauer, was sent off the 6-5 favorite and her bid in the lane was good enough to win by a neck. She is out of the Vronsky mare Rovenna, a two-time stakes winner and earner of $419,030. Her top-earning sibling, the Street Sense gelding Simovitch, has won five times in 43 starts and earned $328,920.

Lady Angelina earned a 102 HRN speed figure on Thursday, graduating in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Aqueduct in her third career start. The 3-year-old daughter of Violence, trained by Bill Mott, stalked the pace and took over in the lane to win by 2 1/2 lengths. She is the first starter out of the Ghostzapper mare Go Zappem, who placed once in seven starts and earned $9,797. Her second dam, the Unbridled Jet mare Go Unbridled, was Grade 1-placed for trainer Allen Jerkens by virtue of a third-place finish behind Royal Delta in the 2012 Beldame.

About HRN speed figures

HRN speed figures are AI-generated using HRN's proprietary machine-learning algorithms. Although they involve less human input than other speed figures, we see that as a plus as human adjustments often knock down surprisingly good performances to match expectations. HRN speed figures were launched in December 2024, and our expectation is also that the AI-generated speed figures will continuously get better over time.

The HRN speed figure scale goes from 1 to 160. Part of the reason for this higher scale is this helps us avoid assigning a speed figure of zero. For some products, in weaker races, half the field or more may get a speed figure of zero, which leads to inaccuracy and defeats the purpose of speed figures.

Because the HRN speed figures are based on machine learning, as we improve our models we can compute the numbers historically.

Using the top last-race speed figure as a benchmark, here are stats from 2021 to 2024 for HRN and other speed-figure providers:

Top HRN figure, 26.2% winners

Top Beyer figure, 28.1% winners

Top TimeformUS figure, 28.4% winners

Although all HRN speed figures are published on individual horse profile pages on a weekly basis, the daily reports are focused on the top and medium-tier tracks, which represent the majority of top speed figures.
