Rating the Belmont Stakes contenders by speed figures

Ahead of Saturday’s 2020 Belmont Stakes, it comes as no surprise that there is one standout as far as speed figures are concerned.

Tiz the Law's Holy Bull Stakes win garnered the highest speed figure for all figure makers among this year's Belmont contenders, with a 108 Brisnet Speed Rating, 100 Beyer Speed Figure and a 121 on the TimeformUS scale.

In fact, the Constitution colt's best speed rating is several points higher than the next contender no matter the scale. His 108 Brisnet figure is ahead of Dr. Post, who achieved a 104 BRIS figure when breaking his maiden at Gulfstream Park on March 29.

And on TimeformUS, that same race for Tap it To Win is the second best figure at 115. Another prominent contender, Sole Volante, received a 102 BRIS speed figure in his Sam F. Davis (G3) victory at Tampa Bay Downs in February and owns a 96 Beyer speed figure.

Here are the 2020 Belmont Stakes contenders and their lifetime best speed figures:

Tiz the Law received a 100 BRIS number in his most recent race, the Florida Derby (G1) in late March. He is the only other Belmont contender to be coming off a triple digit Brisnet number.

The only Belmont hopeful to post a triple digit Beyer is Tiz the Law, with an even 100 in his Holy Bull effort. On the other end of the Spectrum, Jungle Runner has a lifetime-high Beyer figure of 66.

The Belmont Stakes draws on Wednesday at noon.
