Fast Enough to scratch from Arkansas Derby's second division
Fast Enough, the California-bred who drew into the second division of a split Arkansas Derby (G1), will scratch after reaggravating a shin injury in his final workout.
On Monday, the Santa Anita Park-based gelding showed signs of the problem returning in his left foreleg, per trainer Rafael Becerra.
Fast Enough had registered the bullet work of 62 horses breezing a half mile Sunday on Santa Anita's main track, going in 47 seconds flat.
“He didn’t come out of the work good,” said Becerra. “The same shin came back again. It kind of opened up more than normal. It’s no good.”
By Eddington, Fast Enough was third most recently in the San Vicente Stakes (G2) in February at Santa Anita where he finished behind Nadal, the likely Division 2 Arkansas Derby favorite.
That effort followed a victory in the Jan. 18 California Cup Derby. The shin problem played a part in a wide gap back to Fast Enough's winning debut last May 31.
Fast Enough, who has won two of his three career starts, has earned $173,000 for owner Craig Martin, who welcomed Rockingham Ranch to the ownership group after the San Vicente.
“I’m glad it happened here, while at home,” Becerra added. “Otherwise we’d have been out of town. Anything can happen anywhere. It happened for a reason.”
