Fair Grounds: Speedacious on a roll

Carl Moore Management’s Speedacious, heroine of the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Ladies Sprint last month at Fair Grounds, made it two in a row in facile fashion with a front-running 4 1/2-length tally in Thursday’s Fair Grounds feature, a $48,000 allowance sprint for accredited Louisiana-bred fillies and mares run at 5 1/2-furlongs.

The winner, a 5-year-old mare who also captured the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Lassie by 12 lengths in 2009, galloped out the final furlong Thursday without unnecessary encouragement from winning rider Miguel Mena, who was registering his second win of the afternoon aboard the Bret Calhoun trainee.

The daughter of Yankee Gentleman increased her career earnings to $411,950 with her eighth win in 18 lifetime starts, made the pace with early fractions of 22.60 and 46.08 before accomplishing the final distance in 1:04.25, and returned mutuels of $3.60, $2.20 and $2.10 as the odds-on choice of the fans.

Maggi Moss’s Little  Polka Dot challenged the winner briefly in upper stretch, was no match for that one, but finished clearly second best, paying $2.40 and $2.10 while finishing a length and a half to the good of John Duvielh and Keith and Earl Hernandez’ Cherry Forever, who returned $2.60 in the show spot.
