Fair Grounds: Johnston, Ducoing fined

Confusion about the whereabouts of a Fair Grounds filly on the morning of a race has led to fines for trainers Eddie Johnston and Sturges Ducoing.

According to separate stewards’ rulings issued Sunday, each was fined $500 “for failure to handle his business in a proper manner.’’

The fines stem from the transfer of Telescopic from Ducoing to Johnston. She won the sixth race Dec. 4, for $25,000 Louisiana-bred 2-year-old maiden fillies, as the odds-on favorite.

The stewards said that on entry day for the race, the trainers made a transfer in the racing office. The switch in trainers for Telescopic was noted in the Daily Racing Form past performances for the race.
