Expert picks: Shadwell Turf Mile predictions, longshots
By all accounts it is a wide-open affair in Saturday's Grade 1, $1 million Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland. A quick scan of the morning line odds shows the favorite is listed at 5-1 and eight of the 14 entries in the main body at 10-1 or higher.
Now, see who the Horse Racing Nation's writers like in the "Win and You're In" prep for the Breeders' Cup Mile -- and free past performances are available while forming your own opinion.
Winner: AE Get Western
On the board: #12 Suedois, #3 Bandua
Longshot I like: #7 Diamond Oops
Analysis: Although this field is large, it is not the best in terms of quality. The lack of a superstar entry leaves an opening for an improving horse such as Get Western to step up should he draw into the body of this overflow field. Otherwise, Suedois and Bandua are both in sharp form and few will be surprised if one of them wins.
Winner: #6 Admission Office
On the board: #3 Bandua, #4 Valid Point
Longshot I like: #5 Bowies Hero
Analysis: Admission Office has not missed an in-the-money placing in seven career races. He was beaten a half-length in each of his last two starts, and his late speed from both events are best in the field. Bandua took them as far as he could in a determined effort before succumbing late in the Arlington Million (G1). He’s ratable and may enjoy the cut back to eight furlongs. Valid Point faces his elders for the first time, but the sophomore colt has accomplished everything asked of him in three lifetime races, including a win in the Secretariat (G1). He could be any kind.
Winner: #8 Vintager
On the board: #3 Bandua, #9 First Premio
Longshot I like: #7 Diamond Oops
Analysis: I think my top choice will sit off the early pace of Diamond Oops, Suedois and First Premio. He should be driving toward the wire late. But if Diamond Oops doesn't get pressured early, there's a chance jockey Julien Leparoux can steal one if the other jocks sleep on the longshot. Box 3,7,8 and add 9 if you play superfectas. I actually do like my longshot pick Diamond Oops more than board player First Premio.
