Expanded work tab + video: Breeders’ Cup works across U.S.
Saturday's work tab for graded-stakes winners was a busy one, with Breeders' Cup pre-entrants putting in their final timed breezes before next weekend's world championship races at Santa Anita.
Here is a look at the final preparations by two big racing outfits, followed by the full list of 65 graded-stakes winners who recorded timed workouts on Saturday.
Cox puts 7 of 8 pre-entrants through paces at Churchill
Trainer Brad Cox’s Breeders’ Cup contingent is all based at Churchill Downs and seven of the eight pre-entrants completed their final workouts Saturday prior to the big event.
Here are the official times for each of Cox’s Breeders’ Cup contenders: A Mo Reay, five furlongs in 59.4 seconds. Caravel, four furlongs in 51.6 seconds. Idiomatic, five furlongs in 59.60 seconds. Matareya, five furlongs in 1:00.8. Saudi Crown, six furlongs in 1:12.2. Wet Paint, five furlongs in 1:01.0; and Zozos , five furlongs in 59.8 seconds.
Breeders’ Cup Classic contender Saudi Crown was among the first horses to work Saturday morning and breezed outside Distaff contender A Mo Reay. Owned by FMQ Stables, the speedy Saudi Crown, who had jockey Florent Geroux in the saddle, started his move about two lengths behind A Mo Reay, who was ridden by Edvin Vargas, and finished slightly in front at the wire.
“We put him on the inside last week with A Mo Reay and we put him on the outside this week,” Cox said. “I’ve loved what we’ve seen from him since the Pennsylvania Derby. A Mo Reay is a good work horse and he’s gotten a lot out of his works. By the way he’s doing now here in Kentucky, I’m confident he’ll run a big race in the Classic.”
After Saudi Crown and A Mo Reay’s work, Juddmonte’s Distaff contender Idiomatic breezed with exercise rider Kelvin Perez in the irons. The 4-year-old daughter of Curlin began her move at the 4 1/2-furlong marker and worked through the wire to the 7 1/2-furlong pole.
Godolphin’s Filly & Mare Sprint runner Matareya had a similar move to Idiomatic, breaking off at the 4 1/2- furlong pole and worked through the wire. The six-time winner had some unexpected company when she came upon a Phil Bauer trainee who was working a half-mile. Jockey Flavien Prat, who was aboard Matareya, kept her inside the Bauer runner.
Following the 7:30 a.m. track renovation break, Godolphin’s Distaff contender Wet Paint worked with Prat in the irons and stayed inside stablemate Highland Falls. Like the rest of the Cox runners, Wet Paint started her work at the 4 1/2-furlong pole and worked past the finish line.
Just following her work, Barry and Joni Butzow’s Dirt Mile contender Zozos breezed with Geroux in the saddle.
“He’s on his game right now,” Cox said. “I think he’s more on it right now than he was in the Ack Ack. I’m really happy with how he worked today.”
There was a special training session Saturday morning for horses pre-entered in any Breeders’ Cup turf races, which allowed Sprint contender Caravel to work on her preferred surface. The champion Pennsylvania-bred worked with Perez in the saddle, who will travel with the Cox contingent to Santa Anita on Monday.
The eighth member of Cox’s Breeders’ Cup army is Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (GI) contender Timberlake, who worked five furlongs in 59.8 seconds on Friday.
D'Amato applies finishing touches to his 5 at Santa Anita
It’s been seven years since Santa Anita-based trainer Phil D’Amato won his only Breeders’ Cup race with Obviously in the 2016 Turf Sprint at Santa Anita. Next weekend at Santa Anita, the noted turf conditioner will have five chances to add to that total in the 40th Breeders’ Cup.
All five of D’Amato’s Breeders’ Cup contenders worked Saturday including Desert Dawn, who drilled five furlongs on the main track in 59.8 seconds. The 4-year-old Cupid filly is pre-entered in both the $2 million Distaff at 1 1/8 miles and the $1 million Filly & Mare Sprint going seven furlongs, both next Saturday. D’Amato said he plans to enter Desert Dawn in the Distaff when entries are taken Monday.
“It was a solid drill. I think we’re Distaff bound,” D’Amato noted.
Bred in Arizona by owner H & E Ranch, Desert Dawn has hit the board in three consecutive graded stakes including a runner-up finish in the Zenyatta (G2) going 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on Oct. 1. Last Saturday, Desert Dawn worked six furlongs in 1:13.4.
Motorious, a leading contender for the $1 million Turf Sprint next Saturday, cruised a half mile in 50.6 seconds on the training track. Last Saturday, the 5-year-old Muhaarar gelding fired a bullet when blitzing four furlongs in 46.8 seconds on the training track.
“I was just looking for maintenance with Motorious,” D’Amato said. “He bullet worked last week, so I just wanted an easy leg-stretcher.”
Motorious won the San Simeon (G3) on Santa Anita's hillside turf course in March and was second in the Turf Sprint (G2) on the Kentucky Derby undercard May 6 at Churchill Downs. After being given the summer off, Motorious returned from a nearly four-month layoff and won the Green Flash (G3) going five furlongs at Del Mar on Sept. 2.
This year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint will be run at five furlongs over Santa Anita’s flat turf course.
D’Amato also worked Gold Phoenix and Masteroffoxhounds. Both are pre-entered in the $4 million Turf at 1 1/2 miles. Masteroffoxhounds is also pre-entered in the $2 million Mile.
Masteroffoxhounds, most recently second in the John Henry Turf Championship (G2) at 1 1/4 miles at Santa Anita on Oct. 1, drilled five furlongs on the training track in 1:01.0.
“He went well. We’re still trying to decide what race for him,” D’Amato said.
Gold Phoenix, fifth in the John Henry, worked five furlongs on the training track in 1:02.0. Prior to the John Henry, Gold Phoenix won the Del Mar Handicap (G2) on Sept. 2.
“With Gold Phoenix, it was the same as Motorious. Just maintenance. He did the lion’s share of his work last week with a big drill,” D’Amato said.
Last Sunday, Gold Phoenix worked five furlongs in 1:01.8 on the training track.
D’Amato’s other expected Breeders’ Cup starter is a new arrival to the barn. Laulne, a 2-year-old recently imported from her native France where she was a Group 3 winner, worked four furlongs in 49.8 seconds on the training track. It was her first work in the U.S. By Starspangledbanner, Laulne is pre-entered in the $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf on Friday.
“She went nice. It was just a nice steady half. I’ve liked what I’ve seen from her,” D’Amato said.
D’Amato, a former assistant to the late Mike Mitchell, has racked up 890 wins and more than $65.1 million in purse earnings since launching his training career in 2010. He has won three of the last four Santa Anita trainers’ titles including the 2023 Hollywood Meet and 2022-23 Classic Meet.
