Trainer Kenny McPeek said connections “will make every effort to save her" after the 4-year-old filly Princess Warrior broke down in the stretch Friday of Churchill Downs’ allowance optional claiming opener.

Under jockey Brian Hernandez, the daughter of Midshipman was fourth of five in the turf event when she went wrong on her left-front inside the eighth pole and was pulled up.

McPeek said the filly owned by Evan, Matthew and Andrew Trommer will be sent to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., for treatment.

After Princess Warrior's arrival, McPeek offered a positive update:

A winner of the Mrs. Revere (G2) over the same turf course last fall, Princess Warrior was making her third start of the year having also won Turfway Park’s Latonia Stakes before seventh in Keeneland’s Jenny Wiley (G1).

In April, ahead of the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs announced it is investing $8 million in an on-site equine medial center that can be used in the event of an injury. The facility is scheduled to open in March of 2020.
