Epicenter will undergo surgery for BC Classic injury
Epicenter, winner of the Grade 1 Travers Stakes and an Eclipse Award candidate, sustained a repairable injury in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland.
Jockey Joel Rosario pulled up the 3-year-old colt in the backstretch of the 1 1/14-mile race, which was won by Flightline.
"Epicenter appears to have an injury to his right front fetlock from the initial reports," attending veterinarian Dr. Alan Ruggles said in a statement on the NBC telecast after the race. "He was placed in a protective splint and loaded on the ambulance. They are bringing him to his barn and he will be evaluated there with radiographs."
Later Saturday evening, the Breeders' Cup said in a news release, "After further evaluation by Dr. Larry Bramlage and his counterparts at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, Epicenter was found to have sustained a repairable displaced condylar fracture to his right forelimb. He is settled for the night and will undergo surgery in the morning."
Epicenter, trained by Steve Asmussen, was runner-up in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. While on the Derby trail, he won the Risen Star (G2) and Louisiana Derby (G2). His record for the year is 8: 4-3-0.
