Godolphin's Encke got the best trip in the English St. Leger at Doncaster, denying the undefeated Camelot Triple Crown glory.

Encke, a son of Kingmambo, was ridden by Dubai World Cup-winning jockey Mickael Barzalona and trained by Mahmoud Al Zarooni.

Camelot, unbeaten in 5 starts, was vying to become the first English Triple Crown winner in 43 years. Trained by Aiden O'Brien for Coolmore, Camelot was ridden by O'Brien's son, Joseph O'Brien.

The pair ran into traffic trouble after a slow early pace kept the field closely bunched throughout the 1 3/4 mile race. Encke made a strong run in the final furlong to open up a 3-length lead on the field before O'Brien and Camelot could find racing room. Camelot powered away from the field but could not catch Encke in time, falling a length short of the Godolphin runner.
