Enable wins Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe; on to Breeders' Cup?

Enable, perhaps a bit short on conditioning entering Sunday’s Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe run at Longchamp, got her head down at the wire to make it back-to-back wins in one of the world’s biggest races on grass.

Now, could it be on to the Nov. 3 Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs? That’s possible for the 4-year-old John Gosden trainee, who's listed as the official Future Wager's favorite for the $4 million event.

Jockey Frankie Dettori was in the irons again, positioning Enable just off the pace until she tipped out in the stretch, creating a gap back to his competition. The Juddmonte runner was just able to stay as Sea of Class, another filly, ran on late for a narrow second. Cloth of Stars finished third.

"She is unbelievable," said Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for Juddmonte. “It’s so exciting. What a great ride by Frankie. The other filly came to her. She was just getting a little tired. She probably needed the race, but what a great job by John.”

Even in a field of 19, Enable was off at even money on the United States tote. She became the first horse in 100 years to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe off just one prep, entering with only a Sept. 8 score in Kempton Park's September Stakes due to a setback earlier this season.

Gosden revealed after the victory that Enable also experienced an elevated temperature between her prep race and Sunday's feature, meaning we still may not have seen her best this year.

“They made it a true test, and she was not at full, full, full fitness because she’s had one little run around the all weather, and that’s not how you come into the Arc," Gosden said. "She’s managed to hang on by grit, determination and brilliance.”

There's talk of the British-bred daughter of Nathaniel remaining in training for a third straight run at the Arc in 2019, too.
