Enable to face 11 in the Arc; who's her 'biggest danger'?
Enable could make history in a number of ways Sunday by winning her third straight Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1). And that includes some added intrigue after Thursday's gate draw.
The 5-year-old mare, unbeaten in 12 straight races, will face just 11 rivals, with the Arc field its smallest since Dylan Thomas won the 2007 running. But Enable will also break from stall No. 9, which has produced just one winner in the past 50 years.
Owned by Prince Khadlid Abdullah, trained by John Gosden and ridden by Frankie Dettori, Enable remains an odds-on favorite to win the Arc, set for 10:05 a.m. ET at Longchamp.
Urban Sea in 1993 was the last horse to win from Enable's stall. But many are saying the gate won't matter for the daughter of Nathaniel, who enters off previous victories this season in the Coral-Eclipse (G1), King George (G1) and Yorkshire Oaks (G1).
Two of those victories came over Magical, who was also second to Enable in last year's Breeders' Cup Turf. Magical, who got away from Enable and won the recent Irish Champion Stakes (G1), is back for the Arc.
But Dettori, according to AttheRaces.com, pointed to a 3-year-old Aidan O'Brien stablemate as Enable's toughest foe Sunday.
"If I had to pick one horse to worry about it would be Japan," Dettori said of the sophomore who defeated Crystal Ocean in the Juddmonte International (G1). "He’s got low mileage, he’s an improving horse and is a good 3-year-old. He is my biggest danger.”
The Arc, of course, is expected to mark a career finale for Enable, who also holds a "Win and You're In" free trip to the Nov. 2 Breeders' Cup Turf should connections seek one last hurrah.
