Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s homebred Emotional Kitten surged to the lead at the eighth pole en route to a 1 1/2-length victory over Northern Passion to win the $66,000 Cherry Valley Purse for fillies and mares before a Sunday afternoon crowd of 13,238.
Trained by Wesley Ward and ridden by Paco Lopez, Emotional Kitten covered the 1 1/16 miles on a turf course rated as “good” in 1:43.46.
It was the first victory of the year for Emotional Kitten, whose most recent score came in the Mrs. Revere (G2) last November at Churchill Downs. A 4-year-old Pennsylvania-bred daughter of Kitten’s Joy out of the Ghazi mare Silent Emotion, Emotional Kitten improved her record to 20-5-3-3 and upped her earnings to $452,503 with Sunday’s $33,720 check.
Favored in the field of eight, Emotional Kitten returned $4.40, $3.20 and $2.80. Northern Passion, ridden by Julien Leparoux, returned $5 and $3.40 and finished a nose in front of Pappascat who paid $5.20 to show under Corey Lanerie.
Racing resumes Wednesday with an eight-race program that begins at 1:05 p.m. ET.
