Eightfiveinafifty blows turn

Eightfiveinafifty's much anticipated stakes debut in the Whirlaway was a shocker like nobody anticipated.

Breaking a tad slowly from the rail in the five horse field, jockey Jorge Chavez tried to settle the 3-10 favorite on the lead, just to the inside of Three Day Rush.  But going into the first turn, Eightyfiveinafifty completely blew the turn carrying Chavez well out into the track.  The two continued out into the track and the 3-year-old ultimately hit the rail, unseating his rider.

Andy Serling reported on the incident on twitter at http://twitter.com/andyserling and reported that Chavez was conscious and taken by ambulance to North Shore University Hospital for evaluation.  Chavez was taken off all mounts for the remainder of the day.  Serling also reported, "Contessa says 85ina50 is "okay".  He has a 2 inch cut that will require a "couple of stitches" but is walking fine."

Peppi Knows, a 3-year-old gelding by Stephen Got Even, won the Whirlaway by one length over Afleet Again with Three Day Rush another half-length back in third.  He covered the mile and one-sixteenth in 1:47.10.

The mutuel results were as follows:

3 Peppi Knows       17.40  5.60  7.70

4 Afleet Again                 8.40  9.80

5 Three Day Rush                    5.50

The $2 exacta paid $161.50 and the $2 trifecta 3-4-5 returned $437.00.
