Egg Drop After Nice Payday in Alcibiades

Little Red Feather Racing got a quick return on its $12,000 purchase of Egg Drop as a yearling last year when the filly won at first asking on September 3 at Del Mar. On Friday afternoon, Egg Drop will be after a $240,000 check when she goes postward in the Darley Alcibiades (G1).

“She broke her maiden on this kind of surface at Del Mar and I know she likes it,” trainer Mike Mitchell said. “Plus, this race is $400,000 and the Oak Leaf (last weekend at Santa Anita) was $200,000.”

Joe Talamo, who was aboard for Egg Drop’s maiden victory, will be back aboard Friday when the filly breaks from post position six in a full field of 14 in the Darley Alcibiades, which is a “Win and You’re In” race for the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) to be run November 4 at Churchill Downs.

Egg Drop was a known commodity to Mitchell even before she landed in his barn.

“Tom McCrocklin buys a lot of horses for Little Red Feather and he’s got a great eye for a horse, especially fillies,” Mitchell said. “He told me about her six months before she ever got here.”

After her maiden victory at 5½ furlongs, Egg Drop had four works at Hollywood Park before shipping to Keeneland.

“Now we hope the Alphabet Soup (the filly’s sire) can carry her two turns,” Mitchell said of the 1 1/16-mile Darley Alcibiades.
