Bob Baffert's hot hand continued at Santa Anita as his 3-year-old filly Eden's Moon coasted home the winner in the G1 Las Virgenes.
The race was Baffert and jockey Martin Garcia's fourth victory on the day. Eden's Moon broke sharply and set the pace in the 1 mile race, followed by heavy favorite Reneesgotzip. The two fillies battled into the stretch, but Eden's Moon drew off to win by 3 lengths. Reneesgotzip held on for second. Open Water was third. The final time for the mile was 1:35.27.
Eden's Moon is sired by Malibu Moon and she is owned by Kaleem Shah. This was the filly's first stakes win in 3 lifetime starts, and the first Grade 1 win for the owner.
The race was highlighted by two unusual incidents. Reneesgotzip appeared to run out of the first turn, sailing far wide before straightening out on the backside. Then, after the finish, Reneesgotzip's trainer, Peter Miller, lodged a trainer's objection for rough riding at the top of the stretch. It appeared Eden's Moon lugged out into Reneesgotzip, but after an investigation, the stewards ruled no change in the order of finish.
