Echo Zulu looks 'very good' as she recovers from leg surgery
Echo Zulu continues to recover well from her Oct. 14 surgery to treat two fractures in her left front leg.
Winchell Thoroughbreds racing manager David Fiske said in a post on social-media platform X on Tuesday that the 4-year-old filly "had her original cast removed and replaced with a less restrictive soft cast today. Her surgery site, follow-up radiographs and blood work all looked very good. She continues to have a good appetite and moves around her stall comfortably."
Veterinarian Ryan Carpenter told Thoroughbred Daily News last week that the surgery “went very well” but that Echo Zulu wouldn't be “out of the woods for the next four to six weeks.”
Echo Zulu, a daughter of Gun Runner and the 2021 champion juvenile filly, suffered the injury during an Oct. 13 workout at Santa Anita, where she was training for a start in the Breeders' Cup.
Trained through her whole career by Steve Asmussen, she is a three-time Grade 1 winner, most recently victorious in the Aug. 26 running of the Ballerina Handicap (G1) at Saratoga. Her career record is 11: 9-1-0 with earnings of $2,640,375, according to Equibase.
