Beverly Park, one of the most actively raced North American Thoroughbreds in the last six years, won for a season-high 14th time in 2022 when he finished first in the fourth race Monday at Mahoning Valley.

Making his 29th start of the year, the 5-year-old Munnings horse held on for a neck victory as the odds-on favorite in a six-furlong starter allowance with a purse of $17,600. The race was for 3-year-olds and up who started for a claiming price of no more than $5,000 in the past two years.

Ridden by Yan Aviles for owner-trainer Lynn Cash, Beverly Park (1-5) was a close second to early pacesetter Diamonds Enjoy (11-1) through the first half-mile. Aviles pushed Beverly Park to the lead at the quarter pole and opened up as much as a 4 1/2-length margin.

Flat Fun (9-2) made a late run from seventh in the eight-horse field to finish a close second. Professional (60-1) raced in mid-pack and settled for third, 3 3/4 lengths behind. Diamonds Enjoy faded to fourth, eight lengths behind Beverly Park.

The winning time of 1:13.03 on a track rated good followed early fractions of 23.35 and 46.95 seconds. Beverly Park returned $2.40, $2.10 and $2.10; Flat Fun $3.00 and $2.10; and Professional $5.60.

The 14 wins for Beverly Park have been the most in a single year since Rapid Redux’s 19 in 2011. His 29 starts are tied for the most in a year since Twins Miracle’s 33 in 2016.

Beverly Park has the rare distinction of having more wins than workouts. He has had only two timed breezes all year, one for a bullet in August at Laurel Park and the other in September at The Thoroughbred Center in Lexington, Ky.
